Bars, etc near to a hotel

We are in the process of booking a trip to Sri Lanka in July this year. The travel company I have been looking at are suggesting a 3 day beach stay at the end of the tour and suggesting Galle area. At this time of year would it be better to stay somewhere else, also we would love to stay at a nice hotel but have some local bars that we could walk to, not just stay at the hotel all the time. Can anybody suggest a place and/or hotel?

Thank you so much

If Hikkaduwa and Unawatuna are included in Galle area, that is OK. Both have several bars and restaurants.

Which place would be the best to stay in? We would like to have a few days relaxing by a beach but have the opportunity to get out and about if we want to. Or, would it be better to stay somewhere else on the island at the middle of July?

Thanks again

Well use search terms Hikkaduwa or Unuwatuna to see the various discussions. Both qualify your needs in the sense that they allow some excursions, though if you've already done a full island tour you'll already have seen the main sights. Hikka is a bit more lively/Costa-like and U'tuna is a bit more laidback but both have quite some similarities, and plenty of bars etc.

All the best,

Thank you for your help. I think I will look at Unuwatuna.
