Praslin in August - what part of the island to stay?

We are going to Praslin at the beginning of August this year. We are trying to decide where to stay.

The West coast, Grand Anse, seems to have more reasonably priced accommodation than the East Coast (Cote d'Or). Is that because the beaches here in August are more windswept, so less nice. Ideally we are looking for a nice self-catering villa, that isn't too expensive

We are planning on going on some excursions to the other smaller islands near by. Are we better off placing ourselves in Baie St. Anne?

How easy is it to get around the island without hiring a car?

When I go during June - November to Praslin I avoid to stay on Grand Anse area for 2 reasons: plenty of seaweed in the water and on the beach which make snorkeling practically impossible; staying on Anse Volbert - Cote d'Or area is more convenient for boat daily trips to nearby islands.

Last time when I visited Grand Anse on November it was really very hard to go into the water: seaweed was everywhere. The same situation was on August 2010.

Without hiring a car you will experience the Seychellois "timetable" of blue Tata buses: sorry but there is no timetable. We stayed on Anse Possession area and we waited for the buses several times when we decided not to rent a car. Sometimes we waited for 15 mins, but there were situations when we waited for 40 mins, the bus did not come and Darryl, a really helpful australian painter took us with his 37 year old Mini Moke from Anse Possession to Anse Volbert.

So it is advisable to rent a car if you want to spend your time visiting Anse Lazio, Anse Georgette or Valle du Mai.

And one more thing: buses do not run after 6-6.15 pm.

The island is small so anywhere is 20 minutes away maximum. This way you can benefit from the better prices on the Grand Anse side and throw in car hire (always essential for me personally) and a couple of meals or drinks too for the difference of staying on Anse Volbert. Google 'Ocean Jewels Resort Praslin book online' and checkout websites based in Seychelles offering best price guarantee for price comparison and offers such as 4=3.
