Walk-up Booking for Airlines

Hi Sumatra people! I asked this question in my other post below, but it's buried under a different header:

What are people's experiences with walk-up booking of local airlines (Lion Air, Sriwijara, etc) - is it a reasonably safe way to go? I'm flying from Singapore to Medan tomorrow morning, and am a little bit hesitant to book the next leg up to Banda Aceh on-line. Should I risk it with the reservation, or is walk-up booking not a big problem?

Thanks to anyone willing to share their experiences!

Avoid Sriwijara as their aircraft are too old. They have new aircraft on the way which is probably even more reason to avoid travelling in their current legacy fleet. Some of them are potential flying museum relics of a bygone era, especially a couple of the older 737-200s.

Unless you are an aviation history enthusiast then keep away from it.

Lion Air operate a fleet of current generation 737-900ERs and their Wings Abadi subsidiary regional airline use current generation ATR72-500 turbo-props. Both these aircraft types have been purchased new and are part of the airlines currently expanding fleet.

I suggest you use the online booking service to avoid missing out on a seat or paying a premium due to limited availability.

Normally the (price) sweet spot with Lion Air is around 5-10 days pre-flight.

Sometimes Canadian credit card holders have problems finalising payments on the website. If so then you may need to go to the tiket loket of each airline, check seat availability and price and then buy the ticket that suits you best. Best to pay in cash for this.

Check the flight prices and availability online from an internet connection at Changi (Singapore airport) pre-departure.

Even though the price info will be out of date info by the time you arrive in Medan you will at least know the flight numbers and departure times and have a rough idea of the appropriate price to pay.

This may be important to ensure no one looks for an opportunity to raise the price above the correct available one.

You will need to pay a domestic departure Passenger Service Charge of Rp 35,000 (in cash) in addition to the ticket price. This will be payable after issue of the boarding pass.

Garuda is the only 'full-service' airline operating on the route, they also have two flights per day.... www.garuda-indonesia.com/gi_us/index.page

MES-BTJ is operated by GA0146 and GA0142

Prices start at IDR 490,100 for seats on GA0146.

Awesome info - thanks! Noo need to risk your life in flying museum pieces. Especially when the price isn't any different.
