Hello we are off to Bintan Island in June 2013 for 7 nights and are staying at the Angsana Bintan so would also be interested in some good restaurants to eat. Our hotel has informed us that Singapore Dollars are accepted on the island, does anyone know if this is the case or do we need to take Indonesian Rupiah - Thanks

Most hotels/resorts in Bintan will accept both IDR and SGD currencies as many Singaporeans frequent the island for a short getaway. It may be more favorable if you use IDR if you want to get out of the resort area in Lagoi to other parts of the island like Tanjung Pinang.

And yes, generally prices within the resort are expensive. I was once billed SGD$12 for a plate of nasi goreng (fried rice) within the resort.

Hello, thanks for the advice. Can you advise if the main towns in Bintan are worth a visit for sightseeing and if so what is there to visit.

Thanks

If you've been to Bali, then unfortunately both the atmosphere and amount of sightseeing activities in Bintan is nothing comparable to Bali's. However, if you are keen to venture out of the resort area to explore the island, you can check out Pasar Oleh Oleh which is a small cluster of Indonesian-style huts offering traditional Indonesian snacks, handycrafts and souvenirs. Some resorts actually provide a complimentary shuttle bus service directly from the resort lobby to the Pasar Oleh Oleh.

Besides water activities, if you're keen on the local culture, you could check out Mangrove Discovery Tour or Sri Bintan Kampung Eco Tour etc...

You're welcome :)

We advice you to visit :

Tanjung Pinang is the biggest town & capital city Riau Islands province. The located on South of Bintan island and has ferry and speedboat connections to Sumatera island, Karimun, Batam, Malaysia - Johor Bahru & Singapore. Take a walk down to the docks and find yourself a little boat "Pompong" to take you for a round trip go and see Penyengat, Senggarang and Sungai Ular Temple.

Penyengat (a small) island located 15 minutes across Tanjung Pinang, the island of Penyengat in the 18th century was the twin-seat of the Sultan of the Johor-Riau Kingdom. Small boats "Pompong" are available to carry you to Penyengat from Tanjung Pinang jetty "Pelantar", about US$1 per person.

Senggarang Temple complex including Chinese and Hinduist worshipping places. This includes a 40-armed statue and several animal deities. From there, you can walk to a stilt house village, where there is also a temple that a tree has grown into. There are boats going from Tanjung Pinang piers to Senggarang frequently, haggle for price.

Sungai Ular Buddhist Temple, or Snake River Temple, is a little way up the so-called snake river (for its windings). The best (and probably only) way to get there is by boat. Go there for some gory murals depicting the Chinese version of hell.

Generally the local market prices for eat, transport, board & lodging in South Bintan - TanjungPinang city lowest than North Bintan - Lagoi area.

Cheers,
