taxi from airport

hey everyone I thought that I could get a blue bird taxi from the airport ---WRONG!! THEY ARE NOT ALLOWED IN THE AIRPORT and so you have to barter with airport taxi drivers when you arrive at midnight and have a seething mass of them ....not good! do not pay anymore than 90k to get to sanur with aiport taxi

there is a pre paid taxi booth for people arriving in bali wishing to get a taxi to their hotel. You pay the price advertised on the board, a driver is allocated, you are escorted to your taxi and the driver will also help with your bags. You are dropped at your accommodation with no more to pay.

here is a picture of the taxi booth.

What about the recent claims that the staff were charging above the advertised rates? A forum poster claimed a staff member at the taxi counter said (when challenged) something along the lines of "How else are you going to get to your hotel?"

Another poster said they had only ONE window open at the counter and the queue wait was nearly two hours!

Any else with recent experiences?

Hi

There are two or three issues here that have been discussed on or off for the last few months.

Firstly if you arrive after midnight be prepared to find the taxi windowed closed as we did last September. At this point if you haven't pre arranged for a driver to pick you up, you will need to be ready to negotiate hard with the drivers that hang around just outside the arrivals hall.

Take a look at the topic "How Much Is A taxi From the Airport" in the right hand margin of this forum to get an idea of the normal prices of taxis from the airport. Whilst you will have no choice but to pay a premium at this time of the morning this at least will give you a starting point from which to negotiate., i.e. we were staying in Legian which is normally around rp100,000 with a driver or rp60,000 in a taxi. At 2am when we arrived the drivers started asking fares around 300,000 and with a lot of hard negotiating we got it down to 120,000 which whilst high for Bali prices wasn't bad value in comparison to Australian prices for a taxi.

The other point raised by Studman65 was that if you do arrive when the taxi window/kiosk is open they don't always charge the advertised price. Again this is correct as we discovered on two earlier trips last year. The price seems to be treated more and more as a guide only and for us it was slightly higer on both occasions with the argument that our hotel was not in the centre of the village.

And lastly, as has been advised before, if the window is open, don't barter with the drivers whilst you are waiting in the line to be served. They will always charge you a higher price.

Cheers

PK

Thanks md and Chewy!

We will be getting into Denpasar around 10.00 pm, so it will be late. There are six of us and we'd like to travel together from the airport if we can, so we're looking at a van if possible, but if it IS a taxi(s) we have to use, I wanted to know what the lay of the land was. Great advice!
