New Delhi - Varanasi - Bodhgaya

Greetings! I'll will be in Gurgaon for 2 months starting from November in an exchange programme.

Would like to travel, to Varanasi, the site of sacred River Ganges, then to Bodhgaya, the Buddhist Pilgrimage. (If time allows, wish to visit Rajagahar, etc)

However, i might have 4 days maximum to spend. Or some other weekends, 2 days.

Kindly advise on how shall i plan my tour. As I'm on a budget tour, it would be best not to spend so much on the travelling.

Thanks.

1. Re: New Delhi - Varanasi - Bodhgaya

You can do this in 4 days.

Day0 - Take a night train from New Delhi to Varanasi

Day1 - Varanasi & Sarnath

Day 2 - Bus/Train to Gaya (5 Hrs. journey)

Day 3 - Gaya to Rajgir (78 KMs) may go upto Nalanda (Ruins of Buddhist University) & Back

Day 4 - Travel Back to New Delhi.

You can very well do it on a budget. Both Varanasi & Gaya have guest houses even for Rs. 250 per day. Train/Bus travel is also quite economical.

Dear Eeyean,

Greetings from Varanasi!!

The economical way of travel would be

New Delhi to Varanasi by Shivanga Express leaving in the evening and arrivee Varanasi in the morning at 8 AM.

Stay in Varanasi - for two days (one night) and also visit Sarnath ( where Lord Buddhapreached his first sermon) only 10 kms away.,

Depart for Bodhgaya from Varanasi by Doon Express at 4 PM. Bodhgaya is only 220 kms from Mughalsarai and you may cover this in a day.

Back to Varanasi by train

Stay in Varanasi if desired or may again take night train from Varanasi to New Delhi

Thanks for the speedy reply. :) I am now have some clues ;) Really thank to both of you.

However, if like what mentioned by K_Yogi, i am to travel to Nalanda, how shall i back to Delhi from there?

If Nalanda and Rajagahar are near to Bodhgaya, then certainly i want to travel there as well! :)

Also, can i only buy the train tickets when i'm in Delhi? As i have no one now to accompany me. I have to get my travel partner there :)

Thank you.

Can't wait to be there though :)

I think by Rajagahar, you mean Rajgir...

If yes then it's just 78 Kms. from Gaya and Nalanda, which houses the ruins of Budhhist university is approx. 20 KMs from Gaya.

Although, Rajgir has a railway station, but it's a small station and not all trains stop there. Hence, After visiting Rajgir & Nalanda you may come back to Gaya and take a train back to New Delhi, Purushottam & Mahabodhi express are two good trains.

So shall i make it this way?

Day0 - Take a night train from New Delhi to Varanasi

Day1 - Varanasi & Sarnath (Stay one night)

Day 2 - Morning Train to Gaya (It's Bodhgaya??) (5 Hrs. journey)

Stay a night in Bodhgaya

Day 3 - Morning train from Gaya to Rajgir (78 KMs)

Nalanda (Ruins of Buddhist University) & Back

Day 4 - Night Train to travel Back to New Delhi.

Is Christmas a public holiday in Gurgaon?

Do i need to book the trains and guest houses in advance?

Thanks.

Seems a good program.

Gaya and Bodhgaya are two different places, sort of twin cities....

The railway station is in Gaya and the Buddhist monasteries in BodhGaya.

Christmas is a Holiday in Govt. Offices, Bank and in many private offices too.

good news. I will have one week or more, so i'll plan on buddhist pilgrimage.

Shall i take a tour package from delhi? Or i can plan my own's and travel with my friend?

I believe travelling on own will save a lot.

How shall i proceed with the 7 - 8 days or more ?

Thanks.
