Suggestions on Khajuraho-Jhansi (incl. Orchha) trip

Hello fellow Travellers!

We are planning for a 6-day Delhi-Khajuraho-Jhansi (incl. Orchha)-Delhi trip. And we plan to do the travelling by train all through. Need some suggestions on our planned itinerary and also how to go about within each place (local transportation, i mean). We would not have any 4 wheeler of our own, neithr do we want to drive ourselves :-/

Day1: Arrive in khajuraho, visit the Western temples. Hope we can do this on foot or bicycles !

Day2: Panna Nat. park, Ken Ghariyal, Raneh Falls. Need suggestion on the best mode of transport from khajuraho. Also, we not sure if one day is sufficient to cover all these attractions.

Day3: Visit the other temples in khajuraho.

Day4: Journey to Jhansi; Spend the afternoon & evening visiting Jhansi Fort. Again, what should be our local transportation medium?

Day5: Orchha - to cover chattris, chaturbhuj temple, Fort, etc

How to go to Orchha from Jhansi? Should be safe & not too expensive. How to roam around within Orchha. OR, is it a better idea to stay in Orchha?

Day6: Journey fron Jhansi back to Delhi

Thanks in advance!

1. Re: Suggestions on Khajuraho-Jhansi (incl. Orchha) trip

I visited Khajuraho in August 2011 and Orcha and Jhansi 3 months before that.

In my opinion, there is nothing to see in Jhansi. The town is a dump with people having absolutely no civic sense and how to treat their monuments and history. A large portion of Jhansi fort stinks of piss and sh1t. Cantonment area is the only redeeming feature of city, but that's not a tourist attraction in any way.

On the other hand, Orchha in MP, which is less than a hours drive away is majestic and very beautiful. You can hire any shared tempo, taxi or even bus from Jhansi to Orchha. It isn't too far and roads are reasonably good.

Khajuraho is beautiful too and worth staying 2-3 days. You can cover most of Khajuraho on foot or hire bicycles.

Panna national park will need some kind of motor transport. Hire a taxi or a big auto (for cheap). You'll be hard pressed to cover Raneh, Ghariyal Farm and Panna in a day.

If you'll have my advice, spend as much time as possible in Orchha and Khajuraho. Give Jhansi a miss except if you have to catch a train from there.

Dear Knowledge seeker,

Day 1: The plan for this day is perfect. you can simply hire cycle rikshaw or can travel on foot depending on where you are staying. Since you have your evening s free, do not miss the dance performance by locals organized by MP tourism.

Day 2: You can hire either Taxi or the Big Sized Autos. These Big size auto are really good as you can enjoy the scenery of the jungle well in Ken reserve. Please ask driver about the best time to visit to get a chance to see Ghariyaal. Generally early mornings or evenings are suggested. Raneh falls is covered in the same trip and a must see site. The landscape is really beautiful near Raneh falls. You'll have to start your day really early in case you wish to go to Panna as well. You'll be very tired covering so much in a day.

Day 3: Perfect! Hire bicycle and ask the local fellows about the newly found temples. the bicycle ride up to those temples is really interesting as it goes through the village and a nice countryside. In the evening you can see the Light and sound show at these temples. Its really lovely with great background score and voice of Amitabh Bachchhan makes it lively.

If you like variety of foods then you must try the restaurants serving Italian, Lebanese, Israeli and other cafes. They also serve descent pastries.

I am also of the opinion that Jhansi can be given a miss and you can simply go to Orchha and stay there. Orchaa can be easily covered on foot or a taxi can be hired. You can also go to Datiya to see a small fort and a very famous Devi temple (if you are religious).

You can go back to Jhansi to catch you train. Please take extra care of your luggage at Jhansi station.

Have a great trip and do share your experience.

Cheers!

Abhishek

Dear Manza_on_the_road, The weather during this time of the year would generally be humid due to clouds. the temperature shall be under 30 degrees and may rain too. Khajuraho would be wonderful in Monsoon. Take the expressway to Agra (3 Hrs) and have breakfast. Take the clean and fast highway to Gwalior (2-2.5 Hrs) and you can an early lunch. My suggestion would be to take a break a Orchha (18 Kms from Jhansi). Visit the temples, river side and the fort early morning and leave for Khajuraho (around 180 Kms = 3 - 3.5 hours). This would take you to Khajuaho by afternoon of June30, 2013. The road between Orchaa and Khajuraho is descent though not as good as the Delhi-Agra and Agra - Gwalior highways. Enjoy your trip.

Cheers!

Abhishek

Thankyou so much Abhishek !!

Since the general opinion is for a visit during monsoon, we are planning for sometime in July-end.. Which would also mean that, Panna may be closed, but Ken & Raneh would still be accessible. Guess we'll have to be prepared to let go of Panna.

Thanks for the particular mention of restuarants serving diff cuisines..... would love to taste them !

Light and sound show - are they conducted in all the temples?

Jhansi seems like a disappointing & scary option - thanx everyone for the warnings

Maybe we shall stay put in Orchha & enjoy that small town better.

Thanx for the wishes & will share the experience post the trip.

Hi Manza_on_the_road, hope you have started your drive by now. Happy driving, enjoy your trip. Do let us know how it went

Cheers!

Displeasing Experience may happen any part of the country . .. though the law and order is good on above state ...but ladies are always asked to take necessary step and always move with a group
