We are a retired couple with limited funds who are in the process of planning "Golden Triangle Trip" by air from Goa and and onward travel by rail in February 2009.

We need to book a decent clean budget hotel for one night in Delhi with a sightseeing trip the following day then onwards to train station for trip to Agra.

Can anyone assist us by recommending budget hotel with central location also car and driver for 1 day.

We spen a fair bit of time on Indian Rail site on internet but found it all a bit confusing. Would would be so grateful if someone could help us on what is the best tourist train and how do we go about booking it online.

Afer spending a day in Agra we plan to travel by rail to Jaipur and spend a couple of days there then fly back to Goa.

We know it would probably be less expensive to do this trip by car with driver but we felt the journey

time would be longer and more tiring by travelling back and forth from and to Delhi.

Would much appeciate your help.

Kind regards

Dave & Jan

I find it more tiring to do Delhi-Agra by train than by car. First, there's the early morning rush to get to the station. You have to be there at least 30 minutes ahead of the train, so you'll leave your hotel about an hour before the train. You have to hire a car because you can't depend on public transport at that time to get to the station. Then there's the hassle of dragging your stuff and walking through the station, or engaging porters and haggling over money. Then there's the touts and the confusion when you land at Agra, and walking to the end of the station, and the hiring of another car. What do you save? An hour. It is so much more convenient to do an end-to-end trip, where there's a car to pick you up at the hotel, and take you at your convenience. No panicking about train times, no sweating it out in the crowds, no dealing with touts, good restrooms on the way...and then there's the fun of seeing the countryside as well or stopping if you see something interesting.

The train is fun, yes, in its own way. The maddening craziness of Indian stations is a good experience. But for comfort and convenience, I prefer the road.

With Agra-Jaipur, the drive is longer (5 hours). But Fatehpur Sikri is on the way, so it's best done by car.

The train is actually cheaper. I will post again with budget hotels, itinerary and train options.

Hi Deepa,

Thank you so much for keeping us straight regards Rail via road.

We hadn't taken into account the hassles a train journey would throw up and agree that doing the trip by car would avoid this. Certainly one way flights are more expensive but our way of thinking was why do the journey all the way back to Delhi when we could get a flight from our last port of call - Jaipur back to Goa.

We did receive a quote for travel by car and driver from Tour Delhi for 5 days cost £120. They also recommended a few hotels which did not appeal to us but did say we could arrange our own accomodation if we so wished.

Would appreciate your thoughts on this.

We are so greteful for your help.

Thanks once again

Dave & Jan

Hi you can get Tata Indica Car with AC @ Rs. 8800 and good hotels @ Rs. 1500 to 2000 per night inclusive brekfast and Taxes at Delhi , AGra & Jaipur.

You can compare the cost and can book with the agent who have quoted you the price , you can tell us the name of the hotels he suggested you at all the places , I will advise you if they are good and the price offerd is good or High

Hi Vickyrai

Thanks for replying to my post.

Would be great if you could recommend company who rent car and driver for 8,800rps.

Hotels suggested to us by tour Delhi were Blue Sapphire 1500rps - C Park Inn 1900rps - Grand Park Inn 2300rps -Singh Sahib and Good times both 2600rps - Citi International Deluxe 3500rps. Had a look at reviews on most of these hotels and they were not inspiring. Interested to hear your comments on this and of course any help you can provide would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Dave & Jan
