Transfer to Nuweiba from Sharm

We are booked to go next Saturday (17th) and land at 20.40. Have booked private mini bus to transfer our party of five. Travel agent assures us it's perfectly safe, even with curfew. This is our 7th trip to Egypt, second this year, so we are not novices, just a we bit uneasy about breaking a curfew!!! Any advice?

The sense I got in Dahab a couple weeks ago was that the restrictions were being enforced in typical laid back South Sinai style...that is to say that if your driver knows the checkpoint guards or perhaps offers them a bit of persuasion then it's not a problem. Also, this rule apparently applies to vehicles with foreigners only, so there is traffic at night, just not much as usual.

Thanks for that. It's just such a long desolate road!!! Will have baksheesh ready!

3. Re: Transfer to Nuweiba from Sharm

In recent weeks I know of two different instances, on different dates, where foreigners ( in both cases British ), were stopped at the first check point exiting Sharm on the Dahab - Nuweiba road. One family of four were heading to a hotel in Dahab, and another couple were heading to a hotel in Nuweiba, ( in this latter case the minibus taking the couple was Bedouin owned and operated ).

In both cases, the tourists were made to go back to Sharm and catch the late East Delta bus to Dahab !! How the police stop a Bedouin owned and driven minibus and make the guests go by East Delta bus is simply ridiculous. Then for the couple heading to Nuweiba they were allowed to continue their stay in that minibus from Dahab onwards !

As it is, the road is as safe as any other road in Sinai or the mainland. There have been numerous kidnappings, ( six or seven ), over the past two years, ( and in different parts of the Sinai ), though nothing during the past four months, with tourists being held up and delayed for up to 48 hours though never harmed in any way, However, half of these kidnappings have been in daylight so I would not say that day time travel is less risky - although driving in Sinai at night is riskier due to one not being able to see potholes or camels wandering along the road.

Really useful information Sally G. So I guess we either get turned back or allowed to continue! Good to know no kidnappings in last four months though!
