Public transportation fron NYC?

I'm going to spend a week in Manhattan in late April and I'm thinking of taking a one-night mid-week trip to AC.

What's the best and cheapest way to get there by public transportation? I've seen on Greyhound something called a "casino rate". How do I obtain that rate ?

Any info will be appreciated.

Thanks !

Fugazi Travel used to set up and run a lot of bus trips from various places in NJ to Atlantic City for gambling. I don't know if they go out of NY, but if you look at NJ Transit's web page...

... you can probably find a connection.

There are tons of daytrips from all over the NYC area, and most will get you food and coins that will cover the cost of the busride. Both the casinos, and any random internet search can get you info on these buslines.

Thanks for the info.

I was thinking of an overnight trip, without deciding in advance where to do most of my gambling (and either way, I'm coming with a small bankroll). Does anyone know about the greyhound fares?

Greyhound will run you about $28 round trip, it's a couple dollars more on the weekend, $31 I think. Book online at greyhound.com, it will give you the option at the end for the casino rate.

Make sure to book your trip to a casino (when entering on greyhound's site put the destination as Casino_Name, NJ - example: Ballys, NJ). When you get off the bus they will give you a voucher for the slots at the casino. You can put the voucher in the machine and immediately cash it out if you want.

I would recommend since you won't have transportation staying in the Ballys, Ceasars, Sands, Claridge area. There are a lot of casinos very close together there (walking distance). If you go somewhere like the Tropicana you will have to take taxi's or city buses to the other casinos.

Thanks for the info.

So I should actually book for a speciifc casino ?

Would I still get good rates or be eligible for similar coupons if I don't book ahead ? I'm going with someone for a one-day trip and we're not sure on the exact times, and greyhound now have an annoying will call fee on preorders.

You need to book to a specific casino to get the casino rate. You do not have to book ahead of time, you can buy them at the counter when you get to the station. Make sure to specify that you want the casino rate.

You need to buy a bus ticket home for a specific time, but they will honor them on a later or earlier bus. You just need to get on the bus at the destination the ticket specifies. So if you say you will be leaving from Bally's, you need to get on the bus at Bally's. But if your ticket says 2pm and you get on the bus at 5pm it's no problem.

Academy Bus lines also goes to AC from Port Authority daily. WIth Greyhound and Academ the tickets are valid for 4 days and you can basically return when you wish every hour on the hour with Greyhound from the Bus terminal and quite frequently from most casinos with Academy.
