What' sthe best way to get from Atlantic City to NYC (JFK)?

I have a flight at 5pm on a Sunday at JFK, but will be in Atlantic City that morning. How possible is it to drive from AC to NYC? I've never been to either place and am worried about the traffic. My friend could drive me, but I would take public transportation if that's more efficient.

Thank you!

Traffic on a Sunday, especially during the summer is horrendous. If driving I would leave at least 4 to 5 hours if you looking to catch a flight. You don't want to miss it.

I'm not that familiar with public transportation, but there are interconnecting trains and buses that are available. They might be quicker than driving.

I'm sure someone will be along shortly to help with that option.

I was trying to figure out a better way but I would have to agree to have your friend drive you.

If you did take the bus from a casino to Port Authority, you can do it either two ways:

Take the "A" train to Howard Beach -(about 90 mins) then take the Air Tran to your terminal.

Or catch a bus that goes directly to the airport once you get to Port Authority. Now the problem with this is that I know there is a stop on 34 Street and 7 Avenue. Don't know if there is one on 42 and 8th. There is a stop a Grand Central Terminal but that is on the east side. Never done it that way.

I agree with having your friend drive you. I suggest leaving no later than 10 AM. Approx 145 miles.

Doesn't ACES run on Sunday? Then the subway could be used to get to JFK.

Be warned traffic on Sundays is horrendous. So if you have your friend drive leave a lot of time.

Assuming that you want to be at JFK at least 2hrs. before your flight, I would take either: an Academy Bus or a Greyhound Bus (A.M. departure; e.g. (8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.) - from one of the casinos); the bus ride to Manhattan will take approx. two-and-a-half hours and end at Port Authority in Manhattan. Depending on which you choose, a one-way ticket will probably run you approx. $27 - $30. Or take the 8:30 a.m. NJ Transit Bus #319 from the A.C. bus terminal (it makes one stop in Toms River and gets into Port Authority at 11:05 & costs $28.50).

Once in Port Authority - get directions to the subway. (You'll be able to access it from within the terminal.) Buy a single-ride Metrocard from one of the machines - $2.25. Take a "downtown" A Express train (be sure it's one that indicates on the outside that it's going to the Rockaways NOT Lefferts Blvd. Ask people.) You'll take the train to the Howard Beach/JFK Airport stop in Queens (approx. 45 min. ride on the train). Then you'll transfer to the AIRTRAIN which will take you to JFK airport (approx. 10-to-15 min, ride). This is a monorail-like train that will stop at all the terminals. I'm not sure if the fee went up with the recent transit increases or not. It should be $5.00 (buy another Metrocard to get on this train).

This sounds more complicated than it is. You just want to leave early and not be upset if you arrive at the airport with time to spare. Below are links to sites for the things I've referenced - plus one for a "shuttle service" that you could use from Port Authority if you don't want to use the subway. Good luck!

Yes, Thanks nemartin for the great answer. I thought about trying to answer this also but it was too much unpaid work.

thanks all for the suggestions... the public transportation bit does seem a little complicated than I'd like it, but I will look into it. Don't wanna get stuck in traffic though =(

by the way, if we do decide to drive, what time during the day (again, a Sunday) should be best for us to leave AC? early in the morning?
