Hiring a car and driver to get from one town to another

We are a group of 4 and we would like to hire a car and driver, probably to go from medellin to manizales, so that we can go via other places and stop on the way. We are told taxis can't go into other towns because of licencing problems and competition.

Anyone any ideas on the subject? Thanks

I know taxi drivers that have driven from Medellin to Bogota so not sure that is a hard and fast rule.

Basically everything is negotiable .

You'd have to get a quote for stop offs, direct that journey costs about 450,000 pesos with a private operator

Taxi drivers are allowed to go out of their own registered area but they have to fill in a "planilla" and most of them cannot write.

Thanks for the information. We have decided it is not an option and will get the bus.

Thanks for taking the trouble to respond

You can go into the transport terminal and ask for the taxi collectivos. You can catch van's / taxis with limited amounts of passengers (faster than the bus). You could pay the other passengers seats and have your own and ask a price for the stop offs or diversions you want (assuming they are minor?). That would for sure be an option going to Santa Fe for eg (have done it) where they have a taxi service with 5 seats however I think the vans may be the smallest option between Med and Manizales - but you could ask.

There are vans that travel between cities, not sure which companies operate them, but you can catch them from both bus terminals in Medellin, they hold about 12-16 Colombians, or about 10 gringos.

But i think your just be better taking the bus and then hiring local taxis when stopping.

"are any of them air conditioned"

You bet - most are; unless you plan to travel in an old fashioned chiva...
