Dear all,

Well the local specialty is Hot Pot.
There are various restaurants. Huang Cheng Lao Ma is a great up market restaurant to try Hot Pot - heaps of fun.
There are also a few places around Chengdu to experience "street food". I think that is what you mean by "Pedestal"?
There are good places to eat everywhere in Chengdu. There's hot pot and other Sichuan food. In Chengdu all you have to do is follow your nose!
@Jiuzhaigou : i'll keep in mind your good tips :)
@annieandhamish : thank you for your recommendation :) read a bit review about "Huang Cheng Lao Ma" made me drooling :) i'll put it on my list :)
Your welcome.
There are 3 sections to the restaurant. The downstairs part where you sit around a conveyor belt and pick things as the come around. Or there is a room where they sometimes include entertainment while you eat - like the face changing opera.
We sat in their upstairs part around a table with the big hot pot in the middle. All the waiters & waitress were terrific and helped us with mixing all the different condiments they serve with it.
Taxi's are sometimes hard to get in Chengdu at night, especially if it is raining. Out the front of the restaurant they have door men who will rustle one up for you which is handy:)
Have fun - best to book.
hi annieandhamish, I read ... "The 4th floor is a tea house with old Chengdu style bamboo table and chairs. Its skylight ceiling and bamboo gardens make a peaceful atmosphere. In the evening, there is traditional Chinese music performance."
Sounds very cozy :) But can we have hotpot on 4th floor?
Thanks for reminding me about taxi & RSVP :)
Hi, I am not sure. It is a very big place. We only saw the 3 hot pot areas but they might have another one.
We went to Chong Qing Qin Ma Hotpot Restaurant recommended by Sim of Sim's Cozy Garden Hostel– his favorite place for hotpot . It was one of the best meals we had in China – dipping our uncooked meat, chicken, pork, and beef in either mild boiling liquid or the super spicy liquid. I tried the super spicy once and that was enough for me.
3boysmomma - Hot Pot is wonderful, isn't it.
Worth going to Chengdu just for that LOL.
Absolutely love the huge range of food you can order to try. They only come in small portions so if you want to try IE: Yak & don't really like it there is not much wastage.
And all the different flavors you can create with the condiments.
We love hot food but try one with a tomato base, and it's not hot at all. You can drink it as a soup afterward. Really yummy.
