we are going to Yalong Bay in May/June 08 and are wondering which is the best way to take money into China? We are coming from the UK.

Which currency is best?

Travellers Cheques or cash?

Many Thanks Richard.

1. Re: currency

This is one of the five most popular topics on the China TA forum. Go to the search function box at top right, in the China forum, enter "currency" and read hundreds of opinions on where to convert and what to take and carry.

Yalong Bay, Sanya, and Hainan Island are China, and use exclusively the Chinese RMB or Yuan. Most experienced travelers to China recommend you use your ATM card in machines, most commonly Bank of China, to withdraw yuan as needed.

TCs are hard to cash while out of your hotel. Cash is at your own risk for loss or theft. The crime rate is very low, but would you carry 500 pounds in your pocket regularly in your region?

2. Re: currency

We went this year and took chinese currency (RMB). We also used our credit card and didn't bother with t.cheques.

3. Re: currency

We just returned from China, we took Travelers checks and cashed them at the hotels and had no problems. We used credit cards for large restaurant bills and purchases. I didn't want to spend the time trying to find an ATM, worrying if it worked, looking for another if it didn't.
