This town and its airport are used mainly as a jumping off point for people going to Torres del Paine National Park. As such, there are not a lot of sights in town and they can easily be covered in a day. They include the Cementerio Municipal, Mirador Cerro la Cruz and the town center (Plaza Munoz Gamero). There is a nice selection of restaurants and shops in the center and most can be easily reached on foot. The airport is about 12 kms outside of town and an official taxi into the center will run about ChP 8,000 (day) or ChP 9,000 (night). The streets are laid out on a grid system with numerous one-way only streets, so you need to pay attention when driving as to who has the right-of-way. Regular gas in town runs about ChP 900/liter. There are a few other sights outside of town that make nice day trips: (1) Reserva Forestal Magallanes, which is about 8kms outside of town and makes for a nice day hike, with good views of the city and the straits. However, it can be very windy at the top of the mountain, so be prepared; (2) Seno Otway Penguin Reserve, which can be reached starting just past the airport and takes about 1 hour to reach; (3) Isla Magdalena Penguin Reserve, which can only be reached by ship from Punta Arenas.
