driving in chile

Is it possible to arrive Santiago..drive to mendoza..loop around to the coast and drive down to the lakes region and back up to Santiago in 10 days..Or is there a better way to see all of that?

Also is there anything in those areas that you wouldnt want to miss?

Thanks for any help you can give

Rental cars cannot be taken from one country to the other. So Santiago-Mendoza would have to be by bus. 10 days just isn't enough time. Minimum 3 days Santiago-Mendoza. Then 1-2 days to the lakes with little sightseeing on the way. Say 2 days there and you are up to 10 days and most of the time on the road.

Sometimes locals are wrong, like the post that said you can't drive a rental car from Chile to Argentina. We did exactly that in 2004: see DresellyUshuaia.blogspot.com ChileanRentacar@ChileanRentacar.cl had better rates than Avis, the only other company that allowed border crossings, but refused to reimburse us for our replacing a defective tire that, we discovered in a remote place, had been poorly patched. We loved Mendoza and the rest of northern Argentina, which has honest border officials, friendly people, very low prices, terrific scenery and excellent infrastructure, except for some dirt roads. But we drove them. Phone us at 207-729-4001 for more information. Kindly acknowledge this post via phone or our blog. Be sure to ask rental company what documentation you must bring.
