 family trip report (girls 8 & 9yrs)

Just returned from 4nights in Siem Reap after 10days in Vietnam. We all loved our stay in Cambodia. The Cambodian people were delightful and a definite highlight of our stay. Travelling with children made for some unexpected and memorable interactions with the locals.

Stayed at the Royal Bay Inn Angkor Resort (formerly Day Inn Angkor Resort). This was a fantastic choice. The interconnecting rooms which are spacious and clean open onto a beautiful pool area. A pool is essential for a post temple cool off. Breakfast is adequate and they packed a breakfast box for our sunrise tour of Angkor Wat.

We did two days of temples which is plenty with children. On the first day we did sunrise at Angkor Wat, then Angkor Thom, Bayoun,

and Preah Khan. Being on a private tour we decided to forgo the siesta/lunch back at the hotel and continue with the last two temples Ta Prohm and Banteay Kdei to allow an earlier finish for our 8yr old who was hot and tired by this stage. (9yr old was still going strong). We covered this from 5am to midday which included an elephant ride at Ankor Thom (a must for children and adults).

Day two (8-2pm) was further afield to Boeng Mealea, Banteay Srei and Bantreay Samre. Very atmospheric in the jungle-covered Boeng Mealea and well worth the drive through beautiful rural scenery.

Day three we did the Tara Riverboat day trip to Chong Kneas floating village (very interesting) and Kampong Phluck flooded jungle village (amazing). The latter is truly worthwhile both for the beauty of the flooded jungle but meeting the children in the school and having the opportunity to give them books and pens (provided by Tara guide). Our children learnt valuable life lessons about giving to those in need.

On our last morning before flying out we visited the Ankor Childrens Hospital to give a donation of money. The girls suggested we give an item of their clothing too - proof that our children had "got" the message about how lucky they are.

We also did the hot air balloon ride for a spectacular view of Angkor Wat and surrounding country side.

Restaurants are cheap and beautiful. Walking along Bar St to choose a restaurant (menus posted out the front) is safe and atmospheric. Get an hilarious foot massage by sitting with your feet in a pond of fish that nibble on the dead skin.

For amazing icecream head upstairs at Blue Pumpkin.

Tuk Tuks are cheap, easy and fun to get around town day and night.

Although my 8yr old never wants to see another temple, overall she loved our stay in Siem Reap. Tuk Tuks, massages, icecream, boat rides, hot air balloon and elephant rides all made for fantastic fun for children and adults. For the 9yr old and my husband and I, the temples were truly awe inspiring. Enjoy!

Hi,

We had no trouble at all travelling with children in Cambodia. Cambodians adore children and ours were treated like royalty. My 8yr old was rocked to sleep in a hammock by our guide on the Tara riverboat cruise! The hotel staff, guides, drivers, waiters and stallholders all went out of their way to interact and help with the children.

Do warn your son however that they may want to pat his skin and hair to see what it feels like.

Going without a seatbelt was weird at first for our children but they soon got used to this "rebellious" novelty.

Crossing the street in Siem Reap is easy and traffic not too crazy.

Keep him well hydrated as it does get very hot and take plenty of sunscreen and mosquito repellent. We only saw a few mosquitos but best to be prepared.

I second foodiemama's comment about kids being touched.

Many years ago we took our kids to Malaysia, the youngest is/was a very fair skinned, petite, blue-eyed, very blonde child, - everywhere we went people of all ages wanted to touch her - it became too much on a number of occasions, particularly if they were adult men - the kids her own age didn't worry her at all. Do pre-warn your child that this is likely to happen and be prepared to provide that little bit more 'protection' if it becomes overwhelming.

Otherwise we/she had a great time and has continued to do so in all the other Asian countries we've visited over the years.

happy travels

If you have been to Vietnam you are well prepared then for Cambodia. Siem Reap is far less hectic as far as crowds and traffic go and English is much more widely spoken. There are more Western dining options in Siem Reap. Overall, in Siem Reap I think they are more used to dealing with Western tourists.

We are planning a trip with a 9yo and 7yo. Can you recommend your tour guide? Your trip sounds like just the right itinerary for our kids.

Thanks!

Our two days of private temple touring were booked through Travel Indochina and the guide they provided was Sok. I got the impression by being there (and reading TA posts) that most of the temple guides are similiarly knowledgable and friendly. Everyone I spoke to in the hotel were raving about their guides whether they were booked through a more expensive tour package (like Travel Indochina) or simply waved down at the temple site or booked through the hotel. Incidentally they all wear the same uniform.

I think it is a simple fact that the temple guides have to pass an extensive exam hence the knowledge and also culturally, Cambodians happen to be amongst the friendliest, happiest people I have encountered.

Having said that, the guide (Solid), provided by Tara for the flooded jungle tour was simply outstanding. Knowledgable, friendly and funny. There are many references to him on the Tara Riverboat post. He had a special affinity with children. I didnt ask him if he "freelances" and I dont know if he is qualified to do temples. Maybe you could contact him via their website.

Hi Foodie,

I also wanted to say a big thank you for the posting.

My husband and I are taking our 2 daughters, aged 4 & 5, to Cambodia next month for 4 weeks. We are all very excited (especially now the girls have been reassured that Santa will find them in Siem Reap!). I have had a look at Tara's website and it looks great, we will definitely add one of their tours to our list as a day trip.

If you are going on a Tara tour - especially the flooded jungle which is longer, take a water bottle each and a snack for the children. It is quite a long time until lunch on board the Tara. The advertised buffet lunch was not offered due to us being the only tourists that day. Instead, it was limited a la carte which was satisfactory. (obviously you need sunscreen, insect repellant and hats too).
