Bastikiya |
|
Hope you dont mind Kali, but I've put this on the Dubai Forum as the UAE forum as a whole isnt used that much. This way more people will get to see it. All credit to Kali for this post. This might be of interest for anybody interested in a more traditional side of Dubai. Bastikiya is a nice area to wander around and different to anywhere else in Dubai: “We have created Souk Al Bastikiya to attract more people to the area, and to let tourists see that there is a historical element to the city. Bastikiya is already host to numerous galleries, studios and workshops and a lot more events are planned for the next few months. In terms of corporate functions, Bastikiya is ideal for people who want something a little bit different to the shiny new hotels across Dubai. The SAB aims to give visitors the opportunity to discover the heritage and richness of old Dubai.” - Mustafa Al Hashimi, project director at Dubai Event Management Corporation Full report: www.gulfnews.com/nation/General/10268709.html |

Cheers Hannah! I always view all the UAE forums at the same time, didn't even realise that was not the norm :)

Does anyone have a map showing how to get to the Bastikiya pls ? I know its in BurDubai but I am looking for an exact map if one is available. Thnks

That sounds really interesting so thanks to Kali and Hannah for posting! Have never been to that area and really must go on our next visit. (If it is not too hot :-)

Have been to Bastakiya quite recently it's a very nice and interesting place but which is really different to what you normally see in Dubai, however it was completely deserted i.e. I think we were the only ones at this point of time. Either it is not very much known (which I doubt) or tourist visiting Dubai go for something else than historical sites.

ZXM All the taxis drivers will know it. If you want an exact map then any map of Dubai will show it too. Where are you going there from and then we can advise on the best way to get there from where you are.

I would be coming in from Sheik Zayyed but I really need to know the exact street address - I know how to get to the museum but where do I head from from there please?

Perhaps this may help? This a link to some maps and instructions for DIY walking tours in Dubai - …nationalgeographic.com/places/places-of-a-l… The Latimer Trail: If you take a taxi to The Arabian Courtyard you will be right oposite Dubai Museum. Stand in front of the hotel and face the museum. If you go walk away from the museum and AC to the right in about 250 yards you will come to Bastakiah heritage area. Really nice and worth a wander about - I can recmommend Basta Art Cafe for lunch or breakfast here. If you walk to the back of the museum and turn left you will be in Meena Bazzar, where all the tailors shops are. Wander along this street to the end, take a right and you will be at the abra station on the creek side. Grab an abra for 1 dirham and cross the creek. When you get off, immediately in front of you and across a very busy road is the Spice soukh (use the subway) and if you wander throuhg the spice soukh you will pass through the embroidery soukh into the gold soukh. You can then go back across the creek to Bur Dubai or catch a taxi back to the Marina from the Gold soukh exit. The Latimer trail is, obviously, courtesy of Latimer - thanks for that! Hope this may help ...?

Thankyou ! The Bastikiya area does not seem to be very well signposted - seems a shame since it appears to be a real gem !
|
As one of the other posters mentioned there aren't many signposts in Bastikiya so a bit of research before you go is advisable, that way you'll know what you're looking at. The area was originally settled by traders from Iran, including the Bastaki family after whom the area is named. There's an excellent book by Peter Jackson titled "Windtower" which gives a lot of information on the area's houses and the restoration. Demolition was already underway when the plea to save at least some of the houses was made to the authorities. Some photos of the area are here if you'd like to have a look: …smugmug.com/gallery/…222938483_JqGEA
