Hi all,

My husband and I will be in Cairo in January, and were wondering if it is worth a day trip to Alexandria to go scuba diving.

Any recommendations for dive shops? We are recently PADI certified, and very new to diving so we'd like a place that has small groups with very patient DM's. I found this site: http://www.alexandra-dive.com that looks promising.

Thanks for your help!

There are lots of underwater ruins off Alexandria but it is not known for its diving in the same way as the Red Sea.

January is winter in the Mediterranean and it rains in winter. It could easily be quite cold and windy. I don't know what the visibility would be like. I would check with a specialist organisation. I don't know any in the US but in the UK crusadertravel.com are highly recommended.

The REd Sea would be a better bet for diving at that time of year but obviously it is further from Cairo.

Alexandria dive site is not helpful, but when you go there, they will offer you many packages, and they are nice actually...

It's definitely worth it, The old Alexandria is under water.

Hi! I will be also in Cairo beginning of January and I was thinking the same thing - to take one day trip to Alexandria and hopefully to dive. I just sent an email to alexandria-dive, let's see what they reply. Regards,

Mato

We spent a morning diving in Alexandria a couple of weeks ago with Alex Dive. The viz outside the harbour (where you supposedly are seeing ruins of the Pharos) was maybe 5 meters. Inside the harbour, where you see the plane crash and "Cleopatra's table" was only a couple of meters. All dives were less than 10 meters depth. There was a bit of surge but otherwise was very easy diving. I suspect that the viz will be less in January. It's interesting diving but Alexandria is not a dive destination. If you really want some good diving, go to the Red Sea. This was an interesting diversion for us during a several day visit in Alexandria and we had our gear with us, having just spent a week in the Red Sea. Alex Dive is a good operation. For 85 euros you got two dives and a nice lunch, which is pricey but they explained that they must pay a significant amount of money to the local antiquities museum in order to dive the ruins.
