Zadar to Plitvice Lakes: how is the drive?

Hi,

We're planning on renting a car to drive from Zadar to Plitvice Lakes for a day trip next Tuesday, 5 April 2011. Is it a complicated drive? How are the roads? Anything we should be aware of in terms of the drive? This is our first trip to Croatia.

Thanks much!

Sarah

Most of the drive will be on the Croatian toll road so nothing difficult there other than paying the toll! The two laned roads are fine also and everything is pretty well signed on where to leave the toll road so you shouldn't have any difficulties at all. There is absolutely nothing to see on the way though on the toll road...really really dull driving.

We are driving from Split following the same route. Could I assume the drive time to be roughly two-three hours?

Gluten-freeYouandMe,

I don't think you are going to get there in two, maybe right around three hours from Split.

Just an update, we returned from our trip and the drive from Zadar to Plitvice Lakes National Park was so easy; no problems whatsoever. It's literally two roads from Zadar - the toll road, and then once you exit the toll road, you stay on the second road until you hit the park. Actually, we found the scenery along the entire route to be beautiful! The drive climbs up to the mountains, and goes quite literally through the mountains via a 2-3 mile tunnel. We saw some beautiful vistas along the way.

Plitvice Lakes itself is stunning; a must-see.

Glad you enjoyed the drive. Some of the tunnels are quite extensive.

When I drove from Zadar to Trogir, the highway felt very safe with new roads, guardrails, etc., but when we left the highway and onto the secondary roads, the conditions of the roads were excellent but the lack of guardrails at such a height really makes me uncomfortable. Will that be a similar experience with the lack of guardrails on the secondary roads from Zadar to Plitvice?

No you will not be going through the same type of territory. It will be generally flat near Plitvice, not the crazy drops like on the coast.

In April, still might be some snow in the Mountains. Count on that before you drive.
