Transportation to Beach...Bus or Taxi?

Hello,

Should we plan to use the bus or a taxi to and from the beach?

We'll be visiting Martha's Vineyard for a week in July, staying in Oak Bluffs. We won't have a car and are trying to avoid spending the money on renting a car or moped for the week.

We're trying to determine the most convenient transportation option to and from beaches. Is the bus really that easy? Does it easily stop within walking distance at many beaches? Are you crammed in with a bunch of sweaty/sandy people? :) Or would a taxi be worth the extra money for the comfort of being on our own time and with our own space?

Thanks for any help!

On the way to the beach, there won't be too many sweaty/sandy people but on the way back there will be at least ____ (fill in the blank). Is it that easy? affordable-cape-cod-vacations.com/marthas-vi…

Should you take a taxi? they don't want sweaty/sandy people in their cabs. :)

I just came back from a week on Martha's Vineyard. I say take the bus. It's $2 per town per person or $7 for the whole day. Totally worth it. It comes every 15-30 minutes during the peak season so you'll always catch one. Taxi could cost you whatever they feel like charging at the time as there are no standard rates for cabs on the island. Oak Bluffs is fun but make sure you get around the WHOLE island. There is so much to see and experience!!

There is a beach a few hundred yards from oak bluffs so would recommend using your two feet to get you there

If you want to check out the beaches in another town like edgartown or gay head light area there is a cheap and reliable bus that tours the island and leaves from the main park in oak bluffs

Edgartown and gay head cliff and lighthouse are must stops in my opinion

Our family just returned from MV, and we debated the transportation issue all week. Without a car we initially relied on taxis, which are really convenient and the drivers are friendly and helpful, so they will get you where you want to go for sure (these college boys work very hard for tip money, so they will fall over themselves to please you). But the money adds up fast when you need to move around, and spontaneity can kill your budget. By the middle of the week we started trying the buses, and found that if we were careful and planned our day properly we could make good use of the buses and save a lot of money (though timing is everything depending on where you are going). Several family members who were strong bikers also preferred biking to all the beaches, which they enjoyed, but it can really be a bit of a task if you are not in good shape. I would recommend the #13 from OB which runs right down the OB and Edgartown beaches, and you can easily transfer to the #8 in Edgartown for the 7 minute ride to South Beach.

All taxis on Martha's Vineyard have set flat rates, not arbitrary charges. Drivers will gladly show you their rate sheet or you can call the dispatcher for a quote.

Thanks for all the feedback!

We ended up just walking to the beach. We went to the one by the Steamship Authority dock and it was just perfect for us! (For a beach vacation, ease is the most important factor to me...So we just used this beach the whole time.)

Also, we took the bus to the Alpaca Farm and to Edgartown for the day. Super easy.

On another note, we used the taxis to get us and our luggage to and from the ferry and the people were INCREDIBLY nice!
