Marriott Isolation

I am on business in Panama City staying at the Marriott this week. I am working long days near Panama La Vieja and get back to the hotel around 8 pm. I have not had a lot of time to get out and explore, but when I walked around the hotel the other night looking for a place to eat the area seemed less populated than I expected and not well lit. Is there an area of town that has a lot of shops and restaurants in a concentrated area nearby? Most nights I'd like to have a drink, walk around a bit, enjoy a meal. Sorry if this is a stupid question. I have not done a lot of research since it is a work trip and I feel a little unprepared.

Thanks.

I stay at the Marriott often, my suggestion walk or take a taxi up to Via Argentina about 5 blocks from you. If you walk, go out the front door, cross the street walk up the street just to your right, cross Via Espana, cross with the locals so you don't get run over, look to your left you will see a McDonalds, head up the street next to it, you be be on Via Veneto, in the next block will be the Veneto Casino lots of small shops, just past the Veneto on the right hand of the street is the Wine Bar and Pomodoro's restaurant, nice place for a bite and a drink, the Wine Bar has great Sangria, if you continue up the hill about 2 blocks you come to Via Argentina, make a right and there will be coutless small restaurants in the next 7-8 blocks, Via Argentina will loop back to Via Espana, once you hit it make a right and walk back towards the Macdonalds, about 5 blocks, just past the Rey supermarket cross the road and take the second left to get back to the Marriott.

I do this all the time and always feel safe, but then I am a guy. You could take a cab to the Wine Bar, walk up to Via Argentina andthen take a cab back from where ever you eat.

The casinos at the Veneto and the El Panama can be fun if you like to gamble.

Another option, grab a cab to Calle Uraguay, about 5 blocks away, lots of restaurants and clubs in a small area. Cabs should be around $2 to these areas.

Just don't take the cabs the Marriott calls for you, they will cost double, walk out the door make a left walk 30 feet and hail a cab from the bank next to the hotel.

If you like to shop head either to the Multipaza the mall near the new hospital or for more bargains head to Albrook mall, a bit further out, probably about $5 taxi ride.

Don't spend all your time working, PC is great city for having a fun time.

Follow CDY's directions up to Via Veneto and go up that street. After one block, on the right, is Manolo's cafeteria where you can get an inexpensive and good dinner. For the best food in Panama City, maybe in Central America, go up one more block and then turn right on Eusebio Morales. Part way down that block is a restaurant called Rincon Suiza/1985. Outstanding food! If you're nervous about walking there (don't be) or just plain tired, grab a taxi for $1. In the same block as Rincon Suiza is a wine bar and a pub.

The pub is supposed to be pretty good, they brew their own beers.

If you want a bit of upsacle take a cab over to the Radisson, they have a pretty hip bar/lounge, lots of big chairs and couches to hang out in. Best nights are Thursday & Friday nights.

Also a left out of the hotel then just follow the road around to the left to 10 Bistro, a great upscale restaurant, with reasonable prices(by US standards) take a co-worker, not the place to hangout by yourself.

The pub is called Isthmus Brew Pub and the home made beers are very good. Try the sample platter sitting out front and some of their very good appetizers.
