I may have the opportunity to do a brief (3 days or so) stop in El Salvador while doing some travelling next spring. Because it's a short time I would probably stay in San Salvador and not be able to see much else. Is there enough of historic/cultural interest in the city to occupy 2-3 days? I have been to Guatemala City, which is my only frame of reference for a large Central American city. Does anyone have a thought as to how they compare? (I actually liked GC, despite its generally negative reputation here in The States). Is there an interesting day trip from San Salvador that would give me some feel for the rest of the country? (I know that large capital cities are usually not representative of the whole country.)
As an alternative to San Salvador I might also have the option to stop in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Does anyone who has been to both have any thoughts about how they compare? (I do realize that this is a San Salvador forum).
