Suggestions for first time visit.

We are looking for new holiday locations and Croatia is on the list.

I would appreciate suggestions for places to stay which would suit an active couple in their 50's who enjoy a relaxed way of life, walking, photography, good food, along with the opportunity to sightsee. We're not into karaoke, all day English breakfasts or the best Indian/Chinese restaurant in Croatia! :-)

I would suggest somewhere in Istria which seems to have everything you are asking for, especially good food which Istria is noted for.

You will struggle to find anything in your notwant list anywhere in Croatia! I agree, Istria is great because there is so much to see there aside from just lolling on a beach.

In 7 years of visiting Croatia I have yet to find karaoke, an Indian restaurant or English breakfast. The Chinese restaurant shut down near Trogir as it wasn't used. You don't need to go off th beaten track to fulfil your requirements - Croatia isn't the Spanish costas yet!

One very important thing is when to come - and for what you're looking for, I would definitely advise you to omit the peak season period 15 July - 15 August. Beyond that one month, you will enjoy a much more relaxed country, have more space to yourself, not get into crowds. Particularly interesting would be the period before that, when daytime is longer.

If you like sightseeing historic buildings and areas, then it would be better to stay on the continent, and focus on the areas around Pula (Istrian region), Zadar, Split and Dubrovnik. All have international airports, and you may opt for a smaller town from where you could make daytrips in the area. E.g. In Istria in Medulin, Fazana, Rovinj or Porec; in Zadar area in Biograd, Sukosan, or alike; in Split area in Primosten, Trogir, or Makarska riviera, and Dubrovnik perhaps in Zaton or Cavtat, but also in Dubrovnik itself.

Thank you all for the suggestions. We would be travelling in the latter part of June assuming the weather is good at that time.

Weatherwise the latter part of June is just perfect and you will miss the crowds. Unlike Happy, I find everywhere in July and August to be full of tourists. I would say the first week in July would be my cut off point.

When I visit an area for the first time I tend to go on a package rather than doing my own arrangements. Any suggestions for any specialist operators for the area?
