Flights from the US |
|
I am in the initial planning phases for a trip to Coratia next June-July. Given the high cost of flying to Croatia from the US, can anyone share some personal tips and experiences of getting to Croatia on the cheap? My goal is to fly into SPU, ferry to the islands and leave via DBV (or in the opposite order). Ideas that have crossed my mind: Ferry from Venice Fly to Dublin and take Ryanair Fly to major European city and take discount carrier Anyone used a similar method and care to share? |

Easyjet, Wizzair & Flybe operate low cost flights from the UK (Luton, Gatwick, Bristol and Birmingham) to Split. If you are flying from the USA an Easyjet flight from Gatwick is probably the most convenient and cheapest option. For Dubrovnik, Aer Lingus, Flyglobespan & Flybe operate flights to Exeter, Birmingham, Dublin & Edinburgh. I have only mentioned low cost flights from the UK, there are lots of scheduled services, mainly from London e.g. Croatian Airlines Gatwick to Split. Hope this helps a little, good luck!

Booking way ahead may reduce the price.Do not forget to check Croatia Airlines as low cost ones during season are not always cheap(er).

Wizzair stopped the flights to Split last year and now only fly from Luton to Zagreb.

Just pay attention to where the cheaper flights leave from. If you fly into Heathrow and need to fly out of Luton or Stansted it can be done but you need to add in the transport cost and keep an eye on times of landing and times of take off and make sure you have enough time to get from one place to another.

Hello, I am in a situation similar to the OP. My wife and I seek to travel to London from the USA in October. After London, we are looking for onward transit to Zagreb to meet friends. We are impressed with the WizzAir fares from Luton to Zagreb; less impressed with their frequency and schedule. Apart from Croatia Airlines and their higher fares, are they any other options one may know of? We are openminded and aware of the level of service of LCC's in Europe.

Also bear in mind luggage restrictions. I have done trips to the UK and then hopped a cheap flight on Ryanair and Easyjet. But I left most of my luggage in London at my hotel to pick up upon my return since the Ryanair baggage limits are very low.

Thanks all for the good information. Some drawbacks to Wizzair in our opinion: *London Luton inconvenient for same day connections to the USA. *Luggage restrictions and a la carte fees add up quick to the point where they can almost be as pricey as a national, full service carrier. *180 seats in an A320 (most airlines go to 150 total) means that seat pitch is nearly non-existant, especially on a 2:20 leg. *Frequency and schedule leave a lot to be desired; 2-3 times weekly @ 1 flight a day. It would mean tearing up our travel plans to fit their schedule. On the plus side: *Nonstop service from London. *Great fare.

By the time you lose time in London or elsewhere, changing airports, etc., you might as well pay the imo only slightly higher fares of booking it all on one ticket. I have had good luck with http://www.croatiatravel.com/. You may want to check Zadar also, it's not too far from Split, and I think lots of low cost carriers fly there. In the past, I have flow in into one city and out the other and it did not cost more. Good Luck!

Thanks MeanderDC, Our situation is a bit unique. We are to be in London for the NFL Chargers vs. Saints game on 26 October. My wife has never been to London, and she wants a few days to look around. Afterwards, we are planning to meet friends in Zagreb. We like the fare on Wizzair, but their schedule would force us into two unecessary days in London, which we are determined to avoid. Also, we would need a return routing to LHR-Heathrow on 01 November in time to connect with Virgin Atlantic to the USA, same day. So, in short, I've come to the conclusion that Zagreb is a business market, not a tourist market, and that frequencies favor the resort cities of Dubrovnik and Split. As a consequence, the LCC option nonstop to Zagreb are few and far between, as well as more expensive. I just find it hard to believe that there are so few LCC options to Zagreb, considering that it is an emerging european capital, as well as so many croatian expats in the who would want other options to get there.
