Has anyone stayed at the Raffles Tradewinds Hotel just outside Suva? What did you think? It looks as though the property is on the water, however, is there a beach that the guests can use? How about transportation by shuttle into Suva?

We are traveling from Canada with family and are looking for apartment style accommodation. We think we've narrowed down to Capricorn and the Raffles Tradewinds for the Suva area.

Any comments would be most appreciated. Thank you - Brenda & Rob

I stayed at the Raffles Tradewinds in June 2005. The hotel is on the water, however despite being quite visually appealing, it is not a swimming beach. The rooms were clean and a decent size, but the whole hotel had an overall feel of being a bit run down. Food wasnt great from their restauarant. Raffles Tradewinds is about 5 -10 minutes drive outside of the Suva city centre. The staff there will hail a taxi for you if you want to go to town, it should cost around $6 FJD.

Personally, I much preferred the Holiday Inn in Suva - its not really appartment style, but its a much nicer hotel and is in a fantastic location with a great restaurant and swimming pool.

Over the last 14 years we stayed a number of times at Capricorn and kept going back because we liked it. Last year when we were there (September) we found that it was looking quite tired & we had a few problems - including light fittings falling off the wall, phone jack same, cleanliness not up to past standards. I wonder if that might have just been the unit we had - we asked specifically for the top floor 2 bedroom unit because we had had it before & enjoyed the view out over the harbour - maybe they hadn't kept up the maintenance on that one.

However it is in a good position, you can easily walk to town, & they have an OK pool (small) & the staff are pleasant.

I've also stayed at Tradewinds - generally pleasant & agree with all the last poster said. I wasn't aware that they had apartment style accommodation (but I have never asked). If they do & you are self catering there is reasonable food shopping at Lami a 10 minute walk or quick taxi ride away.
