5 day Inca Trail opposed to 4 day??

I'm planning a trip to hike the Inca Trail in May and was considering doing the 5 day 4 night trek. Can anyone tell me what the difference is between the 5 day and the 4 day trips?? My friend and I were going to do the 7 day Salkantay trip, but it seems that no one else is doing that trip in early May and we didn't want it to just be the two of us.

I would guess that as you get closer to May you will see more people sign up for the Salkantay trip. You don't need Inca Trail permits for that hike so it can be more of a last minute option for people that waited too long for the Inca Trail. Last May we met up with a Canadian woman that signed up for the Salkantay trip the night before it left. I think the 5 day Inca Trail just includes an extra night at Aquas Calientes but I'm not positive.

I was just looking at some sites and the woman I mentioned booked her trip through SAS and they do a 5 day trip with no permits but some other groups do join up with the Inca Trail and so would require permits.

Hi, my friend and I are from New Jersey and we are also looking into a 4 or 5 day Inca Trail trek...let me know if you find any useful information! What group are you traveling through? I am just beginning my research and I could use any advice you may have! I was also wondering exactly HOW strenuous the journey is...do you have to be in "marathon-shape" or is this something a relatively healthy person can manage?

We did the Salkantay to Machu Picchu last May and had an awesome experience! It was just the two of us and a bunch of porters. We used Mayuc and our tour guide, Patty, was great. The food was great and the scenery breathtaking. I would definitely do this over just the Inca Trail.
