In my defense, we did take a morning bus from Ollantaytambo to Cusco the third week of January. We made no additional stops and no transfer in Urubamba. The bus departed around 8:00am after the first train arrived from MP. Perhaps this is unusual and we just got lucky, but just sharing our experiance. Even if we did have a few stops along the way, we personally were not concerned. We were just looking for a different experiance and we had the time to spare. It may not be for everyone and obviously a private taxi provide the most efficient means of transportation. We actually did both. The taxi's are still relatively cheap so why split hairs. Sorry if I caused any confusion or mis-information.

No apologies needed ! I did realize that you were writing about the bus from Ollanta to Cusco, not the other way round. I guess getting on the bus in Ollanta before the train / crowds arrive is indeed a good idea.

What type of bus was it ? The usual fairly small local bus or a bigger one ? And where exactly in Cusco did you get with this bus ?

Of course, now I'm wondering if there's also a direct bus going the other way round.

We caught local buses several times (without luggage though!) and enjoyed it very much .
