Planning a trip for April

Hi,

We are planning a trip to Peru the first week of April. The basic plan is as follows:

Day 1: Fly from U.S. to Cusco on overnight flight

Day 2: Go to Ollantaytambo - possible afternoon tour

Day 3: Tour SV

Day 4: Train to Macchu Picchu

Days 4-5: Stay at Sanctuary Lodge for two nights

Day 5: train back to Cusco

Day 6: flight home

A couple of questions:

Shoudl we stay in Cusco instead of Ollantaytambo the first two nights?

Can you recommend a tour guide for thse first two days?

Thanks!

No, better to stay in Ollantaytambo at first. Altitude will be less of a problem then. Machu Picchu is actually about 1000ft lower than SV. Cusco is a good bit higher.

Have you already booked the Sanctuary Lodge? You might check recent threads about this choice. We stayed at the Inkaterra -- lovely place, qute luxurious but about 1/2 the price. http://inkaterra.com/en/machu-picchu

Rodrigo at the Kuychi Rumi can arrange a good tour guide & driver for you (he did for us). email: info@urubamba.com

Your flight will have to be US to Lima and then Lima to Cusco, there are no direct international flights into Cusco.

Normally I would say stay in Cusco and adjust to a higher elevation, but considering your itinerary, you might as well just stay in Ollantaytambo.

Thanks for the help! May be making a mistake but with just a week, we decided to not stay in Lima at all on this trip. Makes for a good reason to go back!! Will check on the other hotel. We were looking at Sanctuary because we thought that it would give us additional time to explore but may not be worth the price. There are sites that we want to see at Cusco but we can change things so that we can visit them after macchu Picchu. Thanks again for the help!

Sanctuary will only give you 20 to 30 minutes more at MP, if that.

Day 1 you can fly to Lima, overnight at hotel, then fly out to Cusco Airport & take taxi to Ollantaytambo.

Meant to say,

Day 1: If you have overnight flight, you can take a morning flight to Cusco, than taxi to Ollantaytambo. Some flights from the US arrive late at night, but ours arrived 6 a.m. We took a 9 a.m. flight to Cusco.

We actually looked at the Sanctuary. You cannot see Machu Picchu from your room, and I agree with redhead that Inkaterra Machu Picchu was a superb hotel. They include wonderful dinners and breakfast buffet in the price of the room. The setting is gorgeous, rooms are wonderful, with easy access from the train. We did need to walk to the bus station and take a half an hour $17.00 ride, but we were glad we did NOT stay at Machu Picchu. I'm not sure the extra price makes for a better stay at all.

I also agree, Sancutuary is not worth the price, cant immagine what they would charge if you could actually see MP from the rooms.

A couple more questions....

Can change from the first week of April to July. Should we fight the crowds in order to assure better weather or will the first week of april be good. If we go in July, the Inkaterra is full. Other hotel recommendations?

Thanks!!
