After living in Ecuador for two years and travelling to Quito for work many times, I will not be staying at the Hotel Rio Amazonas anymore.
For the third time is as many trips they overbooked the hotel so we had no rooms again. This time I was with my family and parents and we were dumped in the lobby while they tried to figure out how to get rid of us.
Their solution the other times was to grudgingly give us a room but this time they insisted we needed to go somewhere else despite the fact we had reserved the room 2 months in advance. After dropping us off at the wrong partner hotel, we finally made our way to the Hotel Reina Isabella where they treated us very well.
The hotel Rio Amazonas itself is decent and the location is fine in the Mariscal area BUT there are so many other good hotels and hostels in the same area that I will not be giving my business to them ever again. The management needs some training on customer service.
A great hostel in the same area is the Magic Bean and a great 4 1/2 star hotel is the Reina Isabela...both with staff that will treat you right.
My advice: Avoid the Rio Amazonas unless you enjoy being treated poorly and having your room given to someone else.
