3 months in Ecuador - how best to rent an apartment?

We are intending to spend around 3 months in Ecuador next year as part of a 6 month trip to South America. The intention partly to see the country and partly to consider a more permanent move there. My initial thought is to spend one month in Quito in a rented apartment or house and one in Cuenca and use these bases to explore the surrounding regions. We would then use the following month to revisit some of the places and to further explore the coastal areas and Amazon basin before moving on through Peru to Bolivia.

I am struggling to find any reputable rental agencies so any recommendations would be much appreciated. Is it better to arrange in advance or wait until we arrive. ANy information would be ,much appreciated re likely costs for a one bed, one bath apt with living space and kitchen, decent, safe areas, good reputable agencies.

Thanks in advance.

One-bedroom apartments are not that easy to find (speaking from experience). If you don't mind living in a hotel for a few days, you can explore desired neighborhoods and look for Se Renta signs in the windows of apt. buildings; there will be a phone number posted as well. If you want to work through an agency, I suggest you contact the ex-pat group on Yahoo (see the link in the Top Question on the right), about living/retiring in Ecuador; they will probably have more info about agents than a travel forum.
