I am embarking on a cruise in Valpariso, I will be flying in one day early. What is the concensus, should I stay in Valpariso, or should I stay in Santiago? Thanks.

Difficult to say!
If you have a whole day in Santiago, then go for it...
But you must remember you have to be in time for your cruise, and it take at least two hours, if not more, to get to Valparaiso.

You should stay in Santiago the day you arrive and tour the city and the second day travel early to Valparaiso and take a city tour before being dropped at the cruise terminal.
The two cities are a "must" and you are going to be so far from home that you should visit both.
