Must Dos in Cebu?

I'm going to Cebu, Philippines this September with my husband. We will be there a week. I will be busy with my in-laws some of the time, but I will definitely have free time to explore.

This is my first trip to the Philippines and to Asia. I love to experience different cultures and I'm very interesting in seeing what makes the Philippines/Cebu unique. What are the things that we must do while we are there? What do the locals like to do?

Hi Tommo,

Thank you for the link! I am new on Trip Advisor so I hadn't found it yet.

I like everything you mentioned. I often hear that outdoor activities and going to the mall are must-dos, but I figured there must be more to the Philippines. Looks like a beautiful place. Can't wait to see it for myself.

You can add Ayala Shopping Mall to that list and enjoy a lovely meal at the AyalaTerraces.

Add this snorkelling paradise, accessible by hiring a bangka (small boat) from the Punta Engano wharf near Shangri-La Resort on Mactan Island, not far from the international airport:

I love these ideas!

Tommo – I know we will be headed to a mall at some point. People are telling me that's what the locals do because the malls are air-conditioned. Is this mall better than the others?

Victorianlad – I've also heard a lot of people mention snorkeling and scuba diving. Any reason you chose the Shangri-La Resort over others? (I'm assuming there are several others to choose from.)

My preference is Ayala but there is also SM.

I used and would recommend Island Banca Cruises.

Before I give you my list, if it wasn't for the Terraces at Ayala Mall, I would not bother going there. SM Mall is bigger. It is the 18th biggest mall in the world. Ayala has more dining choices but SM Mall has more and better facilities otherwise. Such as a permanent art gallery, supermarket style duty free, 10 pin bowling alley, Trades Hall which always has something on display. I like to go in when they have building product displays. They have a huge children's entertainment area with mini train rides, carousel, bump cars (dodgem cars) and a train ride that runs the length of the bottom level of the mall. And the biggest draw for me at SM Mall is the Imax Theatre

For things to do in or from Cebu City, you could

- Watch a movie on the huge screen at the Imax Theatre in SM Mall

- Go to kart zone and ride on the Go Karts

- Go to the Sky Experience Adventure

- Go to the Amusement park in the reclamation area

- Visit Crocolandia

- Go for a picnic at a water park such as Tubod Flowing Waters, Villa Terisita or Aqua Cainta

- Go swimming with whale sharks at Oslob

- Go for a day tour to Kawasan Falls

- If you will not already be spending time on Bohol, you can see the main sights in a day tour from Cebu City. You can go for a day tour to Bohol and go swimming underground in the Hinagdanan cave, visit the Chocolate Hills and do a lunch cruise on the Loboc River

- Pay to use the facilities of a beach resort, for the day, on Mactan island

- Tour the Metro Cebu historical sites dating back to 1521

- Visit a guitar factory on Mactan island and see guitars being made.

- Go diving from Mactan island

- Take a day tour to Moalboal to go diving

- Island hop the small islands near Mactan island

- Take the Bojo river Eco cruise.

- Go to a cock fight

- Gamble in one of the 3 casinos in Metro Cebu

- Go ten pin bowling with expats on Wednesdays

FitzzzF, I only referred to the Shangri-La Resort on Mactan Island as it is adjacent to the Punta Engano wharf from where a bangka (small boat) can be hired with a captain and mate to take you to the offshore resort that I mentioned (which has the snorkelling).

Punta Engano wharf is pretty close to Cebu's Mactan International Airport.

Cebu is a great place for diving or lazying on its white prestine beach resorts. The people are friendly and well adapted to western way of doing things. You should try also the local foods and travel to places in the nearby towns and provinces.

If you look for a hotel, I recommend Movenpick Cebu Hotel and Resort. Its in Mactan Island, near Shangrila Hotel. See this, https://www.facebook.com/1cebucondo for other alternative place to stay.

Enjoy!
