Ambitious volcano Grandslam plan? (Rinjani, Merapi, Bromo)

Hey guys,

I was thinking of doing a kind of a grandslam trip to the major volcanic sites in Indonesia, namely Gunung Rinjani, Merapi and Bromo.

I wonder if any one of you have ever done this, and what is your advice on this? I would also like to add on the Borobudur temple tour to complete it!

Regards

Deshawn

1) Are you planning to do hiking or just touring around these area?? Mt Rinjani requires hiking for at least one night

2) How many days do you have for this trip?? It's doable if you have the time but not when you have only a short break..

3) It's very easy to do Borobudur once you are in Yogyakarta..

Cheers

Hi there!

Thanks for the reply!

1) I was planning to do a quick tour to Bromo and Merapi (which I understand is only a 6hour quick hike to the top/crater lake), and I read that Rinjani needs at least 2D1N which I am prepared to factor in!

2) Hopefully I can squeeze out 5-7days for this trip!

3) Borobudur will definitely be a day visit, possible Prambanan but primarily Boro!

Thanks!

Hi Deshawn,

If you are pressed for time, why don't you do Semeru instead of Rinjani? It takes also at least 2D1N, but you save on the time to travel to and from Lombok. Semeru is close to Bromo, you can combine the visits. See:

Hi Theo,

Sounds like an idea too! Maybe Rinjani is rather off the track, but I do hear Semeru needs more than just 2 days too?

Looking around, I found that the Ijen volcano can be climbed in a day, any advice?

Thanks!

Hi Deshawn77,

You'll have to add Semeru if you want to make it a grand slam : )

Ijen can be done in one additional day from Bromo. The actual hike takes only 60 to 90 minutes depending on ones condition. See:

Hi guys thanks for all your replies!

I may be intending to go end Feb or start of March, but I understand that monsoon season is still around so would it be a good time to go?

And I guess for convenience sake may have to sacrifice Rinjani unfortunately!

Thanks!

Ideal time for volcano trekking is the dry season, May through September.

Bromo and Ijen are still doable, because in the moring is usually does not rain. But be prepared for muddy paths and the views (sunrise!) may be spoiled by clouds.

For Merapi it is just trying your luck, there may be a spell of dry days. But it is no fun when it is raining.
