Just got back from a trip last weekend from Jakarta. I relied on Blue Bird Taxis, Transjakarta Buses and Commuter trains to move around.
Transjakarta Buses - Used Corridor 1 to get to Kota, Monas and Senayan. The Bus Shelter outside Hotel Indonesia Roundabout was closed for MRT works. The buses ran very frequently and were comfortable when they were not crowded. On some occasions, the busways got heavily jammed up along the traffic lights as well. Rp 3,500 for a flat fee. It's quite efficient considering the traffic situation.
Commuter Trains - The fare to Bogor was Rp 10,000 (including a Rp 5,000 refund upon surrender of the card). Very crowded on a Saturday morning when I took it. Trains were air-conditioned. Once at Bogor Station, the walk to the Botanical Gardens was a long one given that only the south gates are opened. The deers residing within the gardens were a delight to watch.
Blue Bird Taxis - I used them 3 times. I got a feeling that I was taken for a ride for my trip to the airport from Central Jakarta when the final bill came close to Rp 230,000. This was a pity given that Blue Bird is a reputable company. I had great impressions of them when I used them in Bandung. The situation wasn't as pleasant in Jakarta.
Anyway, I never felt unsafe taking public transportation while in Jakarta. I took the necessary precautions and it turned out ok. The people & the guards were very helpful as I was totally clueless taking the correct train from Jakarta to Bogor.
Oh yes, the Sunday morning Car Free day was a perfect excuse for me to get closed to the Hotel Indonesia Traffic Roundabout and walk along the main Thamrin thoroughfare from the Monas to Grand Indonesia with much much ease.
I loved everything about Jakarta except the traffic. Allow plenty of time and patience. And thank you all who answered my queries before the trip. It helped. Gramedia Bookstore at Grand Indonesia Shopping Town have fantastic views of the Traffic Roundabout :)
