Which islands?

Hello,

We're travelling to Bali in September. We're staying for 10 days and a want to spend a few days on Bali, and a couple on Lombok.

We've got a few free days (3-4) and want to visit a different indonesian island. Where would you recommend? We considered Flores and Komodo, but transport looks either too slow (boat) or prone to delays (plane). Any other recommendations?

Thanks!

Well, if you don't want too much travel time, then East-Java on the other side of Bali is closest. Most interesting destinations on the East side of Bali are Ijen crater (sulfur lake) and Bromo volcano.

You could take a bus to Gilimanuk - or Banyuwangi including the ferry crossing - and get transport there to either Ijen and/or Bromo.

Another possibility is to take a plane from Denpasar to Yogyakarta (one hour). Yogya itself is a cultural centre, and from here you can visit Borobudur and Prambananan temples (world heritage sites).

Cheers,

Theo

Central Java is a one hour flight from Bali or Lombok and IMO should not be missed on trips to Indonesia. Yogyakarta is not that impressive but as Theo said visit Prambanan (also see the Ramanyana ballet there) and Borobudur - alone are worth the trip. Stay in the countryside north of Yogyakarta which is beautiful - filled with culture and views of volcanoes and hills. The people there (many are farmers) are extremely friendly and charming.
