Trip to Tibet and maybe Nepal?

We are planning a trip to Tibet for this upcoming April. I have read a few posts stating that getting a permit to Tibet could be a problem. Is that the case right now, and could I have difficulty in April?

Also, we will have a total of 12-13 full days for this trip. We were planning on spending 2 days in Beijing, than taking the 2 day train to Lhasa. that would leave us with about 8 days for the rest of the trip. Can we do Tibet, and include Everest Base Camp, with a finish in Kathmandu? and can anyone suggest an itinerary?

thanks

Now it is easy. Who knows next year, but this year Tibet was closed in March.

Probably enough time, here is a possible tour:

Sims have a good reputation as a guesthouse and for providing budget tours.

You might also want to look at this thread listing some recommended Tibet based agencies:

As you need to have a guide when in Tibet, for many people having a good English speaking Tibetan guide is important.

This info may be less than current. I was in Tibet in summer, 1997. I booked on-line with Asian Trekking located in Kathmandu. That was the second trip with them. Both trips were 2 weeks each. The first was in 1996 when I did their trek to Kala Patthar Peak (18,000+ feet) which overlooks the base camp area (17,000). The views of the Everst summit and Nuptse were outstanding and trek there was superb as were those on the trek in. Asian arranged the Tibet trip with visa, air to Lhasa, and transportation (Mindroling,Ymubu Lagang, Samye, Ganden) with overland return to Kathmand, an adventure in itself. Your two week agenda is ambitious. I have been to Beijing. Skip Beijing and the train. You might be able to squeeze Tibet and Kala Patthar if you only go to Lhasa for the Potala Palace and the monasteries in that city. Even then the base camp trek will take some time to acclimate and so on. Asia is well known. Their website is

It seems to me you are a very adventurous person. I believe if you are going to Tibet, the best way is to go into the unspoiled places and do camping. This activity is done by very few people in the world and you can gain once-in-a-life experience from it. Here is a trip you can take and that tour ends at the Nepal border and Kathmandu:

Hi,

If there is no political problem, No problem you travel to tibet in April.

From Beijing -> Lhasa by train it will take 48 hrs and then it is enough to stay 8 days in tibet.
