I have to go to a conference at Nanjing University in April. I was given a list of hotels near the university, and I have read all the reviews, and feel leery about all of them. The choices seem to be the Intercontinental, which I think would terrify me to have to stay in such a tall building, plus the photos of the tubs in the middle of the rooms do not appeal to me. The other choice is the Jingli Hotel, but the photos look drab, and the reviews say it reeks of cigarettes. Also, there is no fitness facility, and I am a serious runner. The other recommended nearby hotel is the Celebrity City, but it has even worse reviews.
I see a New Era Hotel listed as being close to the campus but there is little information about it in the reviews. Does anyone know if it is nice?
Or am I better off staying at the Jinling Hotel or the Sofitel and using a cab?
I would like to be in an area where I can find shops nearby, especially convenience or grocery stores. I don't speak Chinese, and although I have been to China before, I still prefer a place that is more Western. I also will be pretty busy with the conference, so I would prefer a place with decent restaurants and/or room service. Is this possible near the university?
And is the Intercontinental as terrifying as it looks?
