 Recent Flight Experiences - KLM/BA/Cathay

Hi,

I requested advice some time on airlines for a previous trip to Hong Kong. We chose virgin and the flights were fine. However Virgin have now reduced their flight service making us think about alternatives for a future trip.

Best in terms of schedule for us is KLM. Anybody flown with them recently? Previous reviews were not cwholly omplimentary and from what I can see in economy you may not have your own in flight entertainment. However the timings really work for us.

BA flights and Cathay Pacific come next in terms of schedule and price, From what I have read the jury may still be out on the new Cathay shell seat.

Any views from recent experience? We would also have considered Emirates but for a 9 hour lay-over between flights.

Any comments appreciated.

Thanks for your suggestion but sadly they don't fly on the days we have to travel. On the days concerned Quantas seem to be operating through BA flights. Thanks anyway for the sugestion!

I've flown KLM economy class a couple times in the past two years between Africa and Canada via Amsterdam, in economy class. Everything works fine, but the airplanes are getting old. Food is ok, not outstanding. Air France is classier but I think leg room is abit better on KLM. I wouldn't go out of my way to avoid it, nor would I put it high up on my list of favorite airlines. (But I'd take it over most US airlines - Delta, United...).

Thanks for that reassurance about KLM. Their schedules do suit us much better!

I'd pick Cathay over BA any day :)

And KLM economy class cannot compete with most Asian airlines, I'd say, if you can get Cathay for the same price, go with Cathay. Another advantage of using Cathay is, they usually park "closer" at the terminal, there're also more counters to serve you at the airport.

I usually fly with Virgin myself and I think Cathay is just as good.

Emirates have a 0315 DXBHKG daily so surely not a 9hr layover?

Thanks for your comments Lumply - again very much appreciated. I've checked the site again and indeed you are right - there is a flight at the time you mentioned. However the flight you mentioned is not a direct flight (it has one stop) which adds to the journey time. Waiting for the later flight at around 9a.m. delays arrival by only about 3.5 hours but the cost is about £80 per person less. That's why I looked at the later flight.

However your e-mail has made me think again about this option because, from what I have read, emirates service is in the same premier league as other carriers such as Virgin.

best Wishes,

The Emirates flight from Glasgow connects with a flight to HK via Bangkok that leaves Dubai @ 3.15 am, so you dont have to wait there for the 9hrs. The plane takes on passengers at BKK and is on the ground for about one and a half hours before going on to HK. It gets into HK about 5.10pm (all local times) The only downside is that it is a fair bit more expensive. But Emirates have "specials" throughout the year and this flight normally figures somewhere along the line.

Thanks Lids for your advice. I note you are from Balloch. I was at Lomond Shores on Sunday and the scenery was superb. Not quite as warm as Hong Kong though.

I'll check all the prices again and make our choice. Our dates are pretty fixed so that restricts our options.

best Wishes,

Ah Loch Lomond Shores, as you say great scenery on a nice day. Glad you enjoyed it. I'mof to HK on19th and cant wait. Flying Virgin this time but can highly recommend the Emirates flight out of GLA.
