I'm sure I read somewhere that it is the golden anniversary of the People's Republic in a month or so, and that there is a firework display on the 1st of October over Victoria Harbour. Is this correct? (fingers crossed!)

Are there any other particular spectacles or celebrations around that time?

Thanks

The People's Republic of China was founded in 1949, so the golden anniversary had already been marked in 1999.

There should be a fireworks display over Victoria Harbour on 1 October, China's national day. It usually begins around 8pm. However, next year's celebrations would probably be grander, being the 60th anniversary. (The HK government just spent a lot of money hosting the equestrian events of the Olympic Games)

National Day is October 1, and it's a holiday in Hong Kong. The PRC was formed on October 1 1949, so it is a few years late for the 50th anniversary, but one year from the 60th.

I think there are fireworks on Oct 1, but other than that it's a normal shopping day in Hong Kong.

haha, oh right, well I thought I saw that somewhere.. either my memory's going or it was a rather unreliable source! Probably the first.

As long as there are fireworks then I'm happy, that's what I was really concerned about as it must be a spectacular sight over the harbour. I'll definately be at the waterfront for 8 then.

Thanks guys, please excuse my ignorance there!

Vodski,

sorry to hijack your post. Anybody out there with info ? We will be in HK on 1st Oct ( Grand Stanford ) - if my memory serves me right, the view of the fireworks is not too good from this hotel - restaurant or bar( was here about 10 years ago ), are there any recommendations for a good view, maybe a hotel restaurant so we can enjoy a meal then the fireworks, or a bar with a view. I remember the last time I was in HK, there is a flyover/footpath over a road by the Grand Stanford - it was packed with people watching the display, it is something to see and experience.

Dave
