Hi I will be staying in Kowloon. and just wondering where's the best places to buy great quality DVDs. I know there is HMV but I think this will be too expensive, so I'l buy more from the smaller shops and street vendors. Can anyone recommend the best places to buy them. I don't mind if they are original or not, but they MUST be excellent quality sound and audio. Cheers!

Any shops that sell original DVDS and Cds will be good quality.

But picture and Sound quality will depend on what kind of CD or DVD you are buying. If you choose HDDVD or CDs with high quality recording, like 24 bit, or audiophile ones... then those are nicer.

So buying from Mongkok, or Tsim Sha Tsui's stores like Wide Sight... will be cheaper than HMV and will be authentic ones.

Buying from street vendors like in Ladie's Market, those ones are often "copies".

HMV are VERY expensive, about 20% higher. Sometimes more.

I saw the DVD of new movies at HMV selling for $ 168, or $ 198.

In Wide Sight or others DVD shops, $ 128-$ 148

HMV sells some titles that are not available elsewhere ... then you have to buy from them. These are titles from UK (where you are from) or from USA.

Too bad you're not going to China, like Beijing or Shanghai or Xian. They have TONS of GREAT quality fake DVD's there! Some for as little as 60 cents USD. You're pretty much out of luck in Hong Kong. We didn't see ANY place that sold fake DVD's, not even at the markets. They had lots of other things that were fake, like watches, purses, etc.

Moe

They sell VCD's in HK. If your player is capable of this format it is quite a bit cheaper than DVD, and the selection is extensive. I bought a couple last Sept. and was pleasantly surprised. About HKD20/30 each. Good Hunting

Cheers m8, I'l look out for them when i'm there. My DVD player can play VCDs so its all good. In particualr I want the Jackie Chan films Rob B Hood and The Myth in decent quality. I will of course be buying more if the price is right.

Do keep in mind that VCD's quality, both in terms of audio and video, are nowhere near a DVD.

I agree with Umaga. Too bad you're not going to China. We must have bought over 50 fake DVD's in Beijing!!! Great quality too!! I think out of those 50, only 2 of them didn't work because of the region. Didn't see any fake ones in Hong Kong.

Last March I was going to go to that HMV near YMCA Salisbury and The Peninsula, and was very disappointed to find a sports shop instead! Are there any other stores in Kowloon, Causeway Bay, Central, etc?

Xie xie.

HMV still has a location at Tsim Sha Tsui at Hankow Road, not more than a couple minutes walking from Peninsula. It also has stores in most of the shopping districts. See store list here:

http://www.hmv.com.hk/help/hk.asp

As mentioned above, Wide Sight has a good seleciton at a much cheaper price, and they have many stores including locations at Cameron Road and Haiphong Road, both very close to Nathan Road and Tsim Sha Tsui MTR station. Other locations can be found at Causeway Bay and Mong Kok as well.

There is also a CD/DVD shop inside the shopping arcade of CC Wu Building, 302-308 Hennessy Road, Wan Chai. The shop is very small but has most of the new releases. You just ask them whether a title you want is available since the environment is not good for browsing due to space limitation. If they have it in stock, it is probably just about the cheapest you can buy in HK.

Last year I went to the HMV store near Hankow Road, after a visit to the Esprit Outlet there. Saw some new DVD releases, but I am glad that I didn't buy from HMV

The chain of shops named "Cheapy" are selling at much cheaper prices. Their branch in Causeway Bay and in 2 branches in Mong Kok operates 24hr. Saw 19 branches listed in the packing material.
