I posted this info a while ago ( in a PM) so you will need to check if they still correct:
<<<< - Re the hydrofoil - The hydrofoild no longer departs from Chongqing. You depart from Wanzhou and the time breakdown is - 3 hours on a bus from Chongqing to Wanzhou, 7 hours on the hydrofoil from Wanzhou to Three Gorges, 1 hour by bus from the hydrofoil dock into town.
The cost is pretty good RMB 400 I think & includes the bus transfers. Add on more time if you want to explore the 3 gorges separately. This is where the hydro foil stops and they then bus you to Yichang.
On the way along the Yangtze you can also get off the Hydrofoil when they stop somewhere for a look around but you will have to be quick & will need a timetable to see what time it is leaving. I did have one but it was last years & it might have changed. Your hotel in Chongqing should be able to line you up with an agency to buy tickets from.
To get back to Chongqing from Yichang - There are approx 4 trains and they take between 10 to 12 hours. Not sure how long the bus takes ( about 15 hours I think). Yichang does have an airport that services major places like Beijing & Shanghai.
