Trip to China and Thailand Next June

I am hoping to take my daughter (10 years) to China and Thailand next June. We will have a total of around three weeks including air travel. My daughter loves animals and adventures (but not too much hiking). Our main reason for going to Thailand is to see and ride elephants. I'd like her to see Beijing now, while there are still old neighborhoods. Can anyone suggest specific cities we should visit and how long to stay in each city? Would Xian likely be interesting to her? I think she'd love Chengdu so she can hold a panda. How much time should I alot for that area? Should we go to Shanghai?

Thank you.

Here is my suggestion:

Beijing, five days (one day at Great Wall)

Xian, two days

Jiuzhaigou, three days

Chengdu, one day

Lijiang, three days

Guilin/Yangshuo, three days

Shanghai, four days (inc. day trips to Tongli, Suzhou, Hangzhou, perhaps)

Try Thailand for another year. These three weeks in China will whet your appetite for another visit to see much more.

It would be great if he'll be able to see the best China has to offer but I'm guessing this is a rare/expensive trip to the "Far East" to see pandas & elephants.

Definitely go to Chengdu for Panda photos. You won't able to hold them in Beijing.

Haven't been to Lijiang so I can't comment on that. But so far I've been wanting to go to Guilin for the views, Jiuzhaigou for the lakes and Chengdu for the pandas.

If Thailand can't be moved to another trip, give China 2 weeks and Thailand 1 week.

Perhaps not very much on the TripAdvisor radar, but you might also want to consider going to Shapotou, in Ningxia province, northwest China. On our holiday there a few years back we got to ride on camels in the desert, and also an ostrich.
