Certainly Mutianyu is alot quieter as the previous poster has said, Check out cycle china's trips, we did a Wild Wall trip with them. If you want more info, private message me and send me your emaila nd l will send you some photo's.

I echo the other posters, mutianyu is really much less crowded. you still can take gondola to top, there are unrestored parts of the wall you can see. Plus, there is a great tobbagon slide to go down if that is your thing.

Mutianyu definately less crowded and less HAWKERS - a wonderful experience cable car up and toboggan or chairlift down - the walk from Cablecar is 80% down hill or flat from tower to tower - also more original wall -I will go back!!!!

Does anyone have an idea of the cost fo get to Mutianyu from Beijing - either by tour or taxi?

Mutianyu is IN Huairou, so quite close. It shouldn't be hard or expensive to arrange transport by taxi.

Mutianyu is attractive and much less crowded that Badaling, but when you say 'authentic' experience, I have to think that you may want to look elsewhere. Mutianyu is fully set-up for tourism, and the Wall there is heavily restored.

Jinshanling to Simatai is a good hike for those who want to spend more time on the wall and get away from the restored parts of the Wall.
