 Packing for a 3-week trip

Next year, I FINALLY have the opportunity to travel to China. It's been my desire for the last 10-15 years. I'm going for three weeks, covering Shanghai, Xi'an, Beijing, and Hong Kong. I have never taken a trip that long or extensive before so I have two things to consider.

1. How should I pack for such a long trip?

2. Backpack or traditional roll-on luggage? I can see the pros and cons to both.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Oh, I forgot to add that 2/3 of the trip will be a guided tour while 1/3 of it will be 100% independent.

The key is, do not bring too much. Understand that on domestic flights you will be limited to 20kg. Other than personal toiletery items, do not worry too much about forgetting something, you can buy it all there. Actually make sure there is extra space in your luggage for your purchases. The trip will pay for itself if you shop. Actually you should stop shopping at home 6 months prior to the trip.

Obviously, you can also get laundry done at hotels although it makes your luggage lighter, it is not cheap. I have done trips as long as 6 weeks and used to have my stuff washed by the hotel. One day I ealized that they were charging me 15 to 20 rmb to wash socks that I bought for just 5rmb. From there on I would just throw them away and buy new ones.

Definitely the suitcase with wheels is best - at least for me.

I like a backpack better for train travel, but a rolling suitcase is better for flying.

It's cheap to buy things, but I can't bring myself to through things away so instead use about 4 sets of clothes and just wash by hand every night I have a chance and the clothes will dry before I need to pack it.

I agree, 4 bottoms, 4 tops, one sweater, enough underwear and socks to last you for a week and sleeping gear. Wear your one pair of shoes (or pack one more if preferred) Also a travelling clothesline (get from camping shops), a bar of laundry soap & handwash every night. My vote would be for rolling luggage and a small backpack for the plane & day trips. If you private message me your email then I will attach a copy of my packing list that I have refined over many trips. I usually travel with under 20 kg for a family of four & then purchase another rolling bag to put in our purchases on the way home :0)

When are you coming? Important because summer is hot and in southern China, very humid so you need to wash clothes daily, but T-shirts & shorts are lighter to pack. I'd even bring a few old ones and throw them away after a few weeks. If you are coming in winter you'll need scarf & beanie - both easy to buy in China. If you are south of the Yangtze where building aren't heated you might nee thermal underwear too!

I will be going to the same places in a few days. It probably will snow in Beijing and Xian. Should I bring snow boots?

How do the airlines charge for the excess luggage? Air China's website states overweight fee of 1.5% of the ticket price for each kg. Would that be of their full fare ticket price?

Also, what is a beanie?

Oh, don't take snow boots. There could be some snow coming up in Beijing, but you are not likely to find yourself in deep snow.

Thanks, Travellevret.

What kind of footwear do you recommend for Mutianyu or Badaling?

Comfortable walking shoes/sneakers are fine for the Great Wall.

I bought a rolling backpack in China, the best of both worlds. Here are some tips:

1. Everything is pretty cheap in China. So you can pick up more luggage along the way. Buy shoes if you need a second pair because of wet weather. Get a shirt or blouse and throw away later. Shop in Walmart, Carrefours etc. as they have larger sizes.

2. Think of dressing in layers to stay warm, so leave your winter coat at home. T-shirt, shirt or blouse, sweater and then windbreaker keep you very warm.

3. Bring along some powered detergent for your night-time soaking and rinsing of socks, underwear, etc. Roll up with towels and twist to speed drying.

4. Shop at TravelSmith or Wintersilks to get some practical silk things and easily washed fabrics. I can wash a shirt at night and wear the next day after hanging on the cord above the tub.

5. Every hotel above 2 stars has a ironing board and iron in the closet to help keep you neat.

6. Leave your whites at home. You do not want to fool around with bleach, and the Chinese water has a rusty tinge to it some places.

Plan each "outfit" and leave behind anything you cannot wear often. I stay in earthtones for the entire trip and everything matches. It gets boring, but i do not have a heart attack getting to the airport or train station.
