Getting to Mutianyu Great Wall section by public transport.

Hello All,

How do I get to the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall from Beijing?

I know the LP guide states:

Bus 916 or 980 from Dongzhimen Transport hub (I assume this is up and running now, anyhow)

Get off at Huairou.

Catch minibus from Huairou to Mutianyu.

I also found this site:

http://www.mutianyugreatwall.net/

And it's info is much the same, anyone have greater detail?

What I would like to know is:

a/ The minibus concerns me - as I don't speak or read Chinese. Is it easy to find and travel on?

b/ How often do they run - what is the last bus leaving Mutianyu for Huairou.

c/ Do the buses running to Huairou from Beijing run on weekdays, what time is the first bus, how often do they run?

d/ Last bus from Huairou to Beijing leaves at what time?

e/ Anything else worth noting.

f/ Is a taxi or driver a better option, what is the best way to find/organise such (and approx. prices).

Thanks !

Troy

Hi, as far as I know, there several buses from Beijing to Huairou as follows,

A, No.936 bus departure Dongzhimen to Labamen, Huairou from 6:00am to 16:00pm.

B, No.916 bus departures Dongzhimen to Huairou from 5:30am to 18:00pm. It runs each every 20 minutes.

C, No.6 tour bus runs from hot tourism season (Apr. to Oct.).It departures from Xuanwumen, Dongshitiao to Mutianyu directly every morning from 7:00 to 10:00am and back Beijing in the afternoon.

D, No.16 tour bus goes about the same way with No.6 tour bus but departures from Xuanwumen, Dongdaqiao go Mutianyu and bake Beijing in the afternoon.

In the level of taking a taxi, I think it depends your people number that two people is 600 CNY(8 hours service), 4 to 6 people is 1100 to 1,200 CNY(8 hours service). If you think this would fit you, you can try it.

As I will be in Beijing in August.

I.e. from 7 to 10am, every 5/10/15/... minutes?

Time departing from Mutianyu for beijing is?

Also, in terms of taxi, just myself, no others with me.

Destination Expert   What's this?
for Beijing, Lijiang

Most people seem to give public transport to this section of the wall a miss as it is not direct and takes a while. As you said there are public buses from Beijing that go to Huairou and then get a mini bus or taxi onto the Mutianyu wall section, I believe. Have Mutinayu Wall written in Chinese to show the driver. Just keep in mind that some bus services don't run to a schedual and may only leave when full. A bit hit & miss.

Yes a taxi is a better option. A taxi from Beijing to Mutianyu should be about RMB400 regardless of the amount of people traveling. Best way to do it is get a taxi at your hotel & ask a porter to help translate the price with the driver - they are used to it. You pay the driver when he returns you to the hotel or where ever else you are going.

Not sure where you are staying but some of the Backpacker Hostels run trips out to this part of the wall (just make sure you get one with no added stops - eg:shopping).
