China Forum: Visa Application Question

 Visa Application Question

On the Chinese Consulate website it says, "The Passport and Visa Office only transacts consular documents for residents in its consular districts."

I am a resident of California but I am currently attending school in New Jersey. Does this mean that I cannot apply for a visa in New York because of my California residency?

I would put my current address in New Jersey on the application but I am moving back to California in a little over a week.

Since you are in school in New Jersey, you can probably qualify for residency in New Jersey.

Actually, they don't require any kind of proof of residency, so the address you are using is what counts. You almost have to use California, since that is where you will be.

Unless you have a consulate where you live, you should process your application by mail using a visa processing agency anyway (you can't apply by mail directly ot a consulate), and many of those will process Passports for people anywhere.

That's what we did, I found this visa processing agency online: http://www.chinesevisaexpress.com/

Their prices were the best I found and their turnaround time was quick.

I've heard that because of the H1N1 Flu scares, Chinese Visa processing times are a little longer than they were a month ago when we got ours.

Thanks for the quick responses. Well I am actually graduating and moving back to California next week so I can't claim NJ residency.

I guess I'll just put my California address on the application. I would apply at the San Francisco Consulate but I will only be in town for a couple of days before leaving for China.

I'd prefer not to use any agent as it seems quite easy to apply in person at the consulate since I live close to the NYC consulate and the SF consulate back home.

UNCMickey, have you heard about any additional requirements now due to H1N1?
