Yellow Fever

Hello, my partner and I are travelling to Kenya for our honeymoon in September. 14 night stay with. 3 day safari to Tsavo East and Tsavo West. We are getting very conflicting in information regarding the elbow fever jab. Can anyone clarify for certain whether we have to have the jab and provide a certificate? Obviously we don't mind having it done if it is needed / recommended, but our gp states that is no longer recommended and not necessary for our visit?

An help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Vicky

Hi,

If you are coming straight from the UK to Kenya and not visiting any other African countries you do not need it, it is a personal choice. The only chance of you catching the disease is if there is an outbreak while you are here, there has only ever been one before and the last case from that was in the mid 1990s. The WHO no longer recommends vaccination for many parts of Kenya.

Please read the 'FAQ - Do I need the Yellow Fever vaccination?' on the right of this page for lots more info to help you decide

Hello, thank you very much for the helpful information. We were concerned because on a website about tsavo safari park it stated at the bottom that they will require proof of certification before entry. The possible side effects of the vaccine seem quite intense, so if the WHO no longer recommend it as necessary then I think we may leave it.

Which website suggested YF for Tsavo? It is immigration authorities that check certificates not Park authorities. doff ocher was spot on.

That is very strange Pete, how can zero increase by 15%? There hasn't been a case reported in Kenya for 20 years and its only a couple of days since the Government launched an exercise with the WHO and others to gather info to support a case to have Kenya reclassified as a low-risk or no-risk country.
