Anyone done this? we thought of renting a car and driving from the airport to mombasa.
Any tips on the route? what about the roads and traffic?
how long did the trip take to make?
Thanks if you have any experience!

WE just drove to the coast from nairobi and back last week.
If you are used to motorways then this is not your cup of tea.We took 7 hours and that even after breaking the speed limits most of the way.
I suggest you fly there as it will cost about 100$ per person return and will save you 6 hours plus a back ache.
plus if you hire a car the costs will be roughly the same as flying so take a flight.
traffic is not heavy
We live in Kenya so for us its a way of life but if you are not experienced in driving in Africa i suggest you give it a miss.
cheers
My friend drove this route this summer. He said the road was rough and filled with pot holes, etc.
We flew instead, and the cost was minimal (maybe $100 each or less, I think). There are numerous flights. We booked three days in advance from Nairobi and had no problem reserving a space.
Another option to consider is the train. There is an overnight train that leaves 2 or 3 times a week. Another friend did this and enjoyed the experience. I believe travelling 1st class is recommended.
Driving would not be very recommendable. The drive is long, the road in bad condition and hazardous driving by other motorists....flight would be the best option. If you are on a budget then you can take the overnight train leaving Nairobi on alternative dates at 1900 hrs to arrive in Mombasa the next day at approx 0830 Hrs. Depending upon the no of persosn travelling, you can take the first class cabin that has two bunks or the second class cabin that has 4 bunks. The train ticket costs approx US$ 25 one-way and includes dinner, bedding and breakfast. Good value for money but basic and not sooo clean...
I can only second the statements above. If you are not used to Kenyan road conditions this idea can easily turn into a nightmare. Hardly any signs, dangerous pot holes that can easily blow your tyre and dangerous cars/trucks/busses don't make it easy. By no means would I suggest to drive at night.
I like the train a lot. Travel first class, have a great dinner, sleep well and arrive early morning relaxed and ready for new adventures.
I agree with all the comments given!
On the road route - there is only one road!!! So you have no way to avoid the heavy traffic and potholes. It is a long downhill drive - Nairobi is about 6000ft above sea level.
At the moment there are some very good offers on flights Check Kenya Airways website. If I remember rightly, the special offer flight costs less than the fuel to Mombasa.
