husbands job relocating him at end of October. however, we would like to do a quick 6 days visit to finalize schooling for our 5yr old, identify housing(3-4bedrm)with some garden in the spring valley, lower kabete, lavington, westland, kilishewa area), identify for purchase a car.

where would you suggest we stay for our short visit -secure but yet accessible, not too expensive as it would be out of pocket.

in the event that our official docs are not ready for the visit, can we get on a flight from usa with intention of obtaining visa on arrival? if so, any preferred airlines that understands that concept?

any insight is greatly appreciated.

Cannot help with the domestic side but can with the flights.

No problems getting the normal Tourist visa on arrival at JKIA. No photos required, jut fill in the form, pay over the $$ and get your Visa. It may be prudent to contain your excitement when entering initially and not mention that you are coming back to live there as this may just confuse.

All the airlines should understand that you can get a visa on arrival. However, I have been distracted a couple of times when boarding in Canada when the check-in people asked me if I "had a visa". They eventually accepted my explanation that I would have a visa 16 hours hence, on landing in Kenya.

I think you should stay in Graceland Apts. located in the suburb of Kilimani. I live there myself and it's in an excellent location as it's located between Ya Ya Center, and Nakumatt Junction. It would be an excellent location for you to find a house or a school for your daughter. You can rent on both a long term, and short term basis. Please get in contact with me if you'd like more information.

Don't know if it's too late - can recommend the Methodist Hostel in Kilimani, central to the Lavington area, which has some good schools, shops etc. It's very clean, reasonable rates, has a dining room, swimming pool (quite rare) - see entry on Trip Advisor. Recommend hiring a car and driver to get you around - its the best way, negotiate a daily rate. Can recommend Nellion +254 734 354 728.

The main road, Waiyaki Way, splits Nairobi into two halves - it can take ages (hours) to get from one side to the other, depending on the traffic. Highly recommend living on the side where you work/go to school etc, its just really difficult otherwise.

Check out Palm Paradise at Kilimani in Nairobi, http://www.palmsparadise.co.ke/paradise/ for your short stay as you look around for a house. KLM, British Airways are good.
